  • Shane Warne

I went down to Grace Road to watch Leicestershire v Australia in 1993. I lived on Narborough Road at the time and it was only a short walk for me across Aylestone Meadows. It was a 3-day tour match, on and off because of rain. A couple of old chaps there commented on an unknown blonde leg-spinner, a rarity 30 years ago, coming on to bowl. Looking him up on the scorecard we noted his name: Shane Warne.
"No need to worry about him. He won't be in the Aussie's test side" we said....
    The rest is legend.
Legendary Australia leg-spinner Shane Warne, one of the greatest cricketers of all time, dies of a suspected heart attack aged 52.

Sometimes the lights all shining on me, other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me what a long strange trip it’s been.

Just waking up to see this. Much too young. This after Rod Marsh. It's shocking.

Too many memories to single out. Hand and wrist that could RIP the ball like no other. Spellcheck has just done an ironic thing.

    I won't correct it.

He was the biggest character. All theater
Mind games. Secret new balls that were just for the press to write about.

The whole nation is in shock.

Sad to see Dean Jones go too early. Same way Too.

    Warnie will never be replaced

    Long live the King.

When I was at school, Rod Marsh was my hero as I was also a wicket keeper. Always followed him and still remember being disappointed when West Indies won the inaugural world cup against the Aussies. And then we lose Warney : just listened to a great documentary about him

This has been Australia's Lady Di moment.

        Think thats's an exaggeration?

100,000 people are expected to attend the MCG for Warnie's memorial service.

Also expect some very big names to perform at the service.

The Great Southern Stand will now be named after him.

Still can't believe it even though he burnt the candle at both ends. Famous for it. As he said he made the front pages, the back pages and the middle ones as well.

He didn't overdose in Las Vegas. He died at a wellness retreat in Thailand. After a liquid only diet. Wake up call for all men in their 40's and 50's to get a heart check.

        Vale S.K.Warne. Gone too soon.

My deepest condolences for such a heavy loss.
Amen.

Thankyou. He was a lovable larrikin who happened to be the greatest cricketer and competitor ever seen. Beloved in India where he played and coached but stuck to a diet of baked beans on toast, instead of curries and whatnot.

They wrote a musical about him. He wasn't too happy about it but did go to the opening night.

            He was only 52.

State Memorial today at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Expected to be Australia's biggest ever worldwide broadcast. India and Pakistan viewers expected to be in the hundreds of millions. He was much revered there. And in Sri Lanka where he helped in the post tsunami recovery.

It will be a sombre affair. Well. No. It's gonna ROCK!!

The event will feature Robbie Williams, Elton John, Ed Sheeran, Chris Martin, INXS featuring Jon Stevens. Mick Jagger. Don Bradman's opera singing granddaughter Greta will sing the anthem.

Goodbye Warnie. We'll never see your like again.
