Sad news today with the death of Rod Marsh MBE, the great Australian wicket keeper. Old Iron Gloves was his nickname. Caught more than he dropped. One of my boyhood heroes in the Golden Age of Australian Cricket.

Caught Marsh, bowled Lillee

Iconic words.

With Jeff Thomson, Ian and Greg Chappel, Dennis Lillee, Doug Walters and many more. They were tough. Facing fast bowling with no helmets. Maybe a ciggie during the lunchtime break. Always sharing a beer with the opposition after stumps.

Rod was the short, nuggety keeper who seemed like the Keith Moon of the side. Jagger and Daltrey and others worshipped these men. Rockstars seeing rockstars.

In later years became a respected selector and coach. Even helping set up an academy for youngsters in England. Universally loved and respected.

Out for 74. Gone to the big pavillion in the sky.
