  • Randy Meisner, dead at 77

Randy Meisner, a founding member of the Eagles who added high harmonies to such favorites as “Take It Easy” and “The Best of My Love” and sang and co-wrote the hit “Take It to the Limit,” has died at 77.

It's all about the high note at 4:20.

I saw Meisner with The Eagles Hotel California tour in 1977. His singing on Take It To The Limit was probably the greatest vocal performance that I have ever heard live. He stuck each and every note. RIP.

My favorite of his was always "Try and Love Again" - such a gorgeous voice.

Simply stunning, Randy sang from a deep place within himself.

Randy's voice and songwriting was an essential ingredient on those early eagles albums, same goes for Bernie Leadon - they don't really get much recognition for their contributions. Anyone who's only familiar with the singles should give the debut album a spin, Meisner is all over that one - even taking the lead vocal on one of Glenn Frey's ballads.

Do many classic-rock observers consider him to have been among the key members after Henley and Frey?

I mean...in some sense, yeah. Not in, like, a directional/administrative sense because Don and Glenn would never allow that. But those harmonies - which they were rightfully famous for - you couldn't get that without Randy. "One of These Nights" is a prime example of that, because they wanted something that sounded like Motown, and they needed a crystalline high harmony in order to get it right (although Don also has a good scream at the end).
