John Motson, football correspondent and commentator, 77

    Motty.
I met him once after a game at Villa Park. I think it was a school trip with my brother's school to see Aston Villa v Man Utd, which a think Villa won 4-2. We stayed back in the stadium to let the crowds disperse after the game, and Motty came down from the gantry and stopped to chat to the kids. And yes, he had a sheepskin coat on.
Legendary football commentator John Motson, who had an illustrious 50-year career with the BBC, dies aged 77.
Sometimes the lights all shining on me, other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me what a long strange trip it’s been.

          End of an era.

One where the goal mouth was a bog by Christmas.

          Bye Motty.

I've never seen or heard Motty, at least that I am aware of, but I sure can appreciate anyone who does this sort of thing for 50 years! Players, coaches, and other bits and pieces come and go but these radio and TV announcers have a way of sticking around for decades to the point where they become part of the soundtrack of your life. The Cincinnati Reds had a pair of long time radio announcers Marty Brennaman and Joe Nuxhall that remind me of Motty. Joe started with the Reds as the youngest pitcher in major league baseball ever and once he retired from pitching after 10 years he went straight to the booth to announce games for the next 40 years. With 162 regular season games each year that means Joe announced over 6400 games not including spring training or post season. Definitely part of the soundtrack of many lives in this part of the planet.

RIP Motty and thanks for the memories...

The death of John Motson is a bookend for anyone who had a football-facing English childhood from the 1970s to the 1990s
