  • Angela Lansbury, actor

Never having seen an episode of Murder She Wrote, it's for her chilling performance in The Manchurian Candidate, alongside Lawrence Harvey and Frank Sinatra, that I'll remember her for.
Angela Lansbury, star of the US TV crime series Murder, She Wrote, has died at the age of 96.
Sometimes the lights all shining on me, other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me what a long strange trip it’s been.

Used to visit Cabot Cove every afternoon to see the Dad from Happy Days play sheriff and get help from Angela in bringin' blighters to justice. She was also very fond of her nephew. And a certain neighbor. She had class and style.

I don't know what any of that means, but it doesn't matter.
I think she was in Bedknobs and Broomsticks as well, with David Tomlinson. An attempt to emulate the success of Mary Poppins which didn't come off. An entertaining confection nevertheless.

I also know her best from Manchurian Candidate but she also voiced a character in Disney's animated Beauty and the Beast. And when really young she had a small part in Gaslight.

There are two versions of Gaslight made very close together. The one with Lansbury stars Ingrid Bergman. The British version with Anton Walbrook and Diana Wynyard, Hollywood tried to suppress. That's the one I have on a BFI BluRay set.

I'll remember Angela Lansbury fondly, but not necessarily for Gaslight, The Manchurian Candidate, Beauty and the Beast, or Murder She Wrote.

She was a very talented Broadway actor, and starred in Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Anyone Can Whistle, The Pirates of Penzance, Mame, and Dear World (based on The Madwoman of Chaillot). An ex-girlfriend adored her in the film Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

The Blu-ray I have contains both the American and the British versions. I still need to watch the British version sometime.
