Bodies: The Exhibition

This has been an exhibition around the world for 20 years. It shows preserved dead human bodies. I saw it about 15 years ago. You see what a liver looks like from an alcoholic. You will see what a lung looks like from a career smoker.

I’ll second that. I was fortunate enough to see it in two different museums.

edit: I saw. the exhibition “Body Works” in Chicago in 2009. This is a competitor to Bodies: The Exhibition. Later I saw Bodies: The Exhibition at a casino in Connecticut. Anyway, both were fascinating.

Havin' said that. Am currently readin' Bill Bryson's The Body- A Guide for Occupants. So much I did not know about the body. And I have a degree in Fine Art. Havin' studied anatomy and life drawin', painted and sculptured the figure. Touched myself. And others. Oh. Do behave 😉

So Bryson has written all the ways doctors and scientists have used recently deceased people to dissect and study. Testicles studied immediately after a criminal was hanged. Japanese and German doctors experimentin' on POW's. US government testin' their own black soldiers with chemical weapons. Now there is a movement to regulate animal testin'. One hopes that inhumane testin' won't be necessary goin' forward. From prisoners to rabbits given cancer cells.

The subject of the body should be front and centre in schools. Biology. Evolution. Sex ed. Consent. The whole shebang.

The only organ I can remember from growin' up was Phar Lap's heart in a glass case at the Academy of Science in Canberra on a school field trip. Was twice the size of an average thoroughbred.* He won 2 Melbourne Cups. Alongside Sir Donald Bradman, was the most loved Depression era figure. Incidentally was poisoned in America before he officially raced there. A scandal at the time. The mafia suspected.





So yes I agree. Show the damage certain behaviours do to the body. Show that this bag of bones and organs and microbes and bacteria is a marvel of existance.




* OVER 6.5kgs.
Though not as big as Secretariat. Who weighed over 10kgs. Embalmed and buried whole which is unusual for racehorses due to lack of space. Usually just head, heart and hooves.
