    Solar Eclipse 2024!

Get ready because on April 8 2024 the USA gets another total solar eclipse, and this time Mexico and Canada get to be part of the fun! The last eclipse in 2017 went south of us so we had to travel to see it, and on the way home we got stuck in a massive traffic jam. This eclipse is much closer to home and while we won't get totality here we can drive 30 minutes or so north which should be easy enough to do, and if we want we can go to my father's house where he will have 49 seconds of total eclipse coverage from his back porch.

The big problem for us will be the weather which can definitely be iffy in early April in this part of the world. Is anyone else planning on watching this eclipse which will probably be the last one many/most of us will see in our lifetimes? Will Yes' Relayer Tour in Europe be going on when this is happening here?

I'll probably be stuck watching the partial eclipse from home. There will be another total eclipse over the USA in 2045 with a path similar to the last one on 2017 and I hope to still be around for that one as it will be shortly after my 77th birthday.

I was not aware of the 2045 eclipse hammerhead so thanks for sharing that. In 2045 I'll be 82 (!) if I'm lucky enough to last that long so the odds that we'll be traveling for this eclipse are very slim.

I've been to 5 total solar eclipses. Two of them were clouded out, but the other three were in clear skies. What an experience. I have relatives in Texas who are hoping I will come over for the one next year, but unfortunately it coincides with the busy part of the semester for me. However, in around 10 years there is supposed to be one where the center line passes right over my house in Australia. If I'm still alive I will be at home for that one.

I've only seen a few partial solar eclipses and used welder's glass to be able to look directly at the sun in my adult years. In school we made pinhole cameras with shoe boxes to avoid staring at the sun.

One of the must fun eclipse phenomenon I have seen was a pinhole camera like situation with light filtering through the leaves of a tree which projected hundreds of eclipse crescents on the ground around the tree. I've only seen this once and did not have a camera with me but I'm sure there are pictures out there somewhere.

I saw the 2017 eclipse. It took us a little over 2 hours to get there and 7 hours to get back, due to the apocalypse-level traffic once it was over. I'm hoping to be able to see the 2024 event and will probably go to Indianapolis to see it. That's about 2 hours away...I wonder how long it will take to get home?

Indiana has enough open space with good views and lots of back roads to support lots of viewers so it will be interesting to see how it all works out. The return trip in 2017 was the worst traffic I have ever seen over and it was over a huge area. GPS was red in every direction fortunately we had a good map of the back roads so we were able to bypass a good chunk of traffic, and when we got to the spot where we came back to the highway we saw that the police had traffic stopped to control the flow. No telling how long it took people to get through that mess but past that it was smooth sailing.

Watched the partial eclipse in 2017 from my backyard. I have a sun filter for my old telescope and it works great for things like that. I remember that we had a thread about it on the old Yesfans site.

I've got one of those old telescope sun filters two and it worked great also! I also had some of the eclipse glasses.

20TH APRIL - TOTAL ECLIPSE IN NORTH WESTERN AUSTRALIA - EXMOUTH

Here in Sydney we're only gonna get 19% eclipse. Which we won't notice anythin'.

The local school systems here have been asked to cancel in person schooling on eclipse day 2024 to help reduce traffic apparently, so now Betsy is already off for the day (which is a Monday)!

Today. 2.29pm. Sydney will have a 19% partial solar eclipse. Exmouth on the NW coast of WA will get the full 100%.

Bit soggy today in the Emerald City so may not be noticeable.
