Styx and Saga are both accessible melodic rock outfits with progressive elements, closer to Asia, GTR, Rush, Queen, Trevor Rabin, and many others. No, they don't sound like any of those, but are closer to that than, say, Larks Tongues In Aspic part 4. I was hearing a harder rock Supertramp on a couple of those early Saga albums. And I hear straight on Beatles throughout the Styx catalogue despite being labeled by many as some vapid bone-headed AOR juggernaut. But then again, Beatles is in the fabric of most of those bands anyway. Are you missing something? Maybe, maybe not. Depends on personal musical taste. Like any established brand group, they have their moments of brilliance and moments of cringable 'what were they thinking?'.

Fine music to be heard from both to be sure, there is much by both groups worthy of attention. Might not be the stuff for a Gates-Of-Delirium-and-nothing-else type music fan who would prefer Gentle Giant all day long, though nothing wrong with that either. Music is food, everyone gets different nutrients from it. Could be a slow burn artist where one could go from 'their ok, I guess' to 'I kinda like 'em' to eventually 'I gotta get some more of their albums'.

Not that I was aware that it was Styx. I've just pulled up "Styx Greatest Hits" on Amazon and I didn't recognise a single song. All I can say is I'm glad I haven't got to listen to the tracks didn't make the cut... 🙄

They were both pretty rubbish.

My copy of Saga's 1987 album, Wildest Dreams has the title track appearing as both track 3, running 4:58, and track 9, running 4:59. Track three is the canonical placement and runtime.

Typically, since the second iteration of the track is tacked on to the end of the album (Which otherwise runs 8 tracks), I would assume track 9 to be a differentiated version like a "single version", "extended version", "demo version", "alternate lyric version", "acoustic version", or somesuch. I can not figure out any difference between the music on these two tracks.

Does anyone have a version of Wildest Dreams with an extra version of the title track and, if so, do you have any idea what the difference is between it and track 3?

Anyhow, I voted for Styx because they are basically iconic in the US and I have all their albums. I have a feeling it'd be the other way around had I grown up on Canadian radio, though, and it may be the other way around for me anyway eventually as I very slowly continue to accumulate Saga albums and eventually the "what was on classic rock radio when I was growing up" gap fades into the ether as time passes and the bands get on more equal footing in my collection in terms of volume and times listened to. Neither of these groups are tier 1A for me, but both have songs and albums to recommend- and both are groups I wouldn't mind seeing open for Yes (One of them even has, and the other has done Cruise to the Edge with Yes, so they almost have. I didn't go to that tour and I've never been out to sea, so I didn't get to see either of them with Yes, but I imagine some people here have.).
