Roxy music announce 50th-anniversary tour for fall

Love is the Drug was a fairly big hit in the late ‘70s. Avalon also got some airplay. I’m not very familiar with their work either. I did enjoy Phil Manzanera’s albums in the late ‘70s and early 80s. They were great. Eddie Jobson also had a solid album, Zinc, in the ‘80s. There was a lot of talent in Roxy Music. I should dig further into their music.

They only have 8 albums, so easy to collect. First two albums with Eno, Stranded (1973), Siren (1975) and Avalon (1982) are essential. Start there then get the other ones. Can't lose. As for Zinc - sublime. Imagine Yes, ELP and Ultravox shoved into a blender, liquified, collected up into some sort of contraption which looks like a laser gun, and then sprayed messily all up into your ear holes. The sound of the future. That probably was the direction Yes should have went in 1982.

Really shows of Gilmore's spectacular less is more/ space between the notes playing. Other than Tom Cruise being in the movie Legend, and the fact that Mia was underage at the time, it's a great love story with fantastic cinematography. Movie opens with Jon and Tangerine Dream's Loved by the Sun, and closes with this fantastic, powerful song.

I remember the movie being over, and while just about everyone else had left the theater, this song full of awesomness came on. I was blown away. To this day, ( I average going to the movies every two to three years, let's face it, most movies stink, and I have little imagination to help complete them. ), I always stay until the end, as there are sometimes, in that rate occasions, some surprises hidden within the credits.

Didn’t know it become hard to listen to. My fav Ferry song is “Is your love strong enough”. Just casual Roxy fans, know the hits honestly, but this is a great opportunity to see him and Eno for the first time live for me. It’s a shame they are playing in the damn Philly war zone closest to me and not in NJ, but I may endeavor to make the trek to MSG or elsewhere. Exciting. Have to get out the ‘best of’ roxy Disc a friend made for me, and pop in Legend to hear my fav song today (bonus - it’s a good movie, and has Jon A on the soundtrack too).

(Off topic- Bill Murray karoake of”more than this” in Lost In Translation. Is a hoot).

I like all aspects of Roxy Music - the glam years, the middle years with Eddie Jobson and the Avalon years. Avalon drips with romantic dreaminess. Siren is pretty happening if you like Thin White Duke era Bowie/soul influence. The ones with Eno are the groundbreakers and deserving of the worship they get. A glam King Crimson? I can see that. First album produced by Peter Sinfield for one thing. They lost the razor-edge power of their first era by the time of Avalon, but they were a different animal by then. Not a lesser animal, a different animal with other stripes than what they started with. I like both the esoteric/innovative and the ordinary/popular, though I get different nutrients from each.

I saw them in 2001 as well and was happy the great Paul Thompson was back in the fold. I never expected Eno back. I was disappointed they never gave us another string of albums between the late 90's-2000 something. But Eno could produce a new album. It's still not too late for that, nobody's croaked - except Ferry's voice. It is shot, I tell you. I guess that's what smoking multiple packs of cigarettes while pouting in your white tuxedo will do to you. I'll still see 'em though, I like Roxy.

I saw the 2001 reunion tour and it was one of the very best concerts I ever saw. They swung by again in 2003 and I saw them then, too.

Ferry's voice has gotten very thin and frail, and I just don't think he can do just to the old stuff any more. Go on youtube and watch a clip of their HOF induction a few years ago and you'll see.

God knows what the pandemic will be doing this fall, so I think I'll be sitting this one out, though they are one of my favorite groups of all time.

Saw then in concert in Perth Western Australia 1980, whilst visiting my brother. Prefer Avalon etc, smooth seductive. Unfortunately only played More than This on the PA as people left at the end.

The first two albums are superb, like a glam King Crimson, but after that they backed away from further experimentation, and embraced the ordinary and the popular. Good at it too, but not to my taste.

Holy moly!! I'm there. Though Bryan Ferry's voice sounds like he's swallowed a live scorpion these days, I'll deal with it. I won't count on Eno being there wearing ostrich feathers, but damn. Roxy Music is so my bag.
