  • German Police Investigate Roger Waters Over Nazi-Like Costume

Roger Waters was investigated by German police regarding a Nazi-like costume he wore during a performance in Berlin in May 2023.

    Why oh Why Mr. Waters?!

This is silly. The fascist imagery, marching hammers and so forth have been part of The Wall since 1979 including the original album, the shows with Pink Floyd, the Alan Parker film with Bob Geldof and all subsequent live performances of Wall material from Waters including the 1990 Berlin Wall show. In context it’s clear that Waters isn’t endorsing this ideology. it’s another part of the Pink character’s journey and a warning about how mass culture can slip into fascism. Unfortunately there are lots of very literal minded folks these days who will jump on seemingly any excuse to be offended.

Earls Court 1980, the footage isn’t great, but go to about 1:22 and you can see Waters singing “In The Flesh” with the leather jacket and crossed hammer armband:

He's a despicable creep who uses every opportunity to walk the line you say he hasn't crossed, Frumious, but he crossed it a long time ago. I no longer can listen to their music and completely understand why they broke up. Now he defends Russia against Ukraine and is the ultimate antagonist on every issue. This is just the latest example of his trying to get attention to himself because ultimately, he needs the attention just like the former president he says he dislikes. His recent re-recording of DSOTM shows how big his ego is as he has now taken credit for his bandmates work. Please don't defend this creep. You should know better that this and seem to be a bright guy. Let him defend himself hopefully in court over his latest publicity stunt. He's been asked to remove the Star of David from that floating pig but refuses. I hate that I spent five minutes of my life pointing this out because it's best to just ignore him; that is what pisses him off the most.

Michael Jackson used to wear rather creepy uniform type outfits with arm bands and no artistic justification that I know of.
And then there was the band Rammstein…
                Oh well.,.

I'm not much of a PF fan, so whatever went on with Gilmour and Rogers that leaves them both so hostile to one another makes it really difficult for me to get any sort of real view on either. Based on his Wikipedia page, though, I find myself agreeing with some of Waters' views and feeling he misses the mark on others. He seems to use his platform to try and get done what he believes is actual good in the world and seems not to punch down...

So when it comes to being investigated for Nazi imagery in Germany, it strikes me as, like you said, silly. Maybe it's the officials doing their due diligence, because there's a rise in Nazism going on worldwide. I don't know what to think. Maybe it's possible for such a performance to give the opposite of the intended message. Maybe the police are idiots.

They are “investigating” a bit he’s been doing for over 40 years. That is just asinine. I don’t agree with everything Waters says by any stretch, but I don’t think there’s much he has said that is out of step with his overall body of work over the last 50 plus years. Broadly speaking he is consistently anti-government, anti-organized religion and anti-corporate and has been for a long, long time. It doesn’t really matter much who the POTUS is because, to him, they all drink from the same well and wield the same sword. So i don’t think it’s so much that he likes Putin as it is that he sees both sides as mirror images of each other. I don’t agree, but he is who he is and I support his freedom of expression.

I always thought the imagery of The Wall was supposed to be a warning against totalitarian regimes, such as the Nazis.
However, lately he openly supports a totalitarian regime, that is at this very moment waging a war against a sovereign country.

So he can just eff himself, let the Germans screw him over for a while...

The thought police never go away, they just increase and decrease in power over time, and they have been on the up swing for 15 years. This is true in Britain and America as well. A couple of years ago, 400 Russians were arrested in a year for posting something online or saying something. That same year, in the UK with a smaller population, 30,000 people were arrested and fined for inappropriate speech. Unlike Germany and Britain, the U.S. still has free speech - just not in colleges and universities since the left took over. Does anyone remember when (most of) the left was staunchly free speech in America? This is why I haven't voted left since 2012 - not that I vote right, either. It's lonely in the center! heh.

Roger Waters is a tool, and his comments about Russia/Ukraine are idiotic, but the investigation is an overreaction. It’s chilling that a national government would investigate a rock musician for the content of his performance.

I think what some here fail to recognise is that Germany, given their past and all, has special laws in place against wearing Nazi imagary. So what Waters did might actually have been against those laws. That is what's being investigated by the German police.
