  • Ian Bairnson RIP

Relatively obscure, but member of the Alan Parsons Project, Pilot and more importantly to me, The Kate Bush Band. Playing on my favourite (first four) albums and contributing that exquisite guitar solo to the Wuthering Heights fadeout.

Passed away due to Alzheimer's disease.

    Rest In Peace.

Remember the name. Was on a lot of great music.

Didn't the APP use a lot of Pilot musos?

Yep. Pilot too. He was on Magic. January.
Watchin' now on youtube. All good stuff. Ian on twin neck. Bass playin' singer. Flautist keyboard player. Solid drummer. Quality pop.

      Sad. Didn’t know he suffered.

Discovered Pilot very late, and I loved much of their stuff. Ian seemed like a funny/fun guy, and a fantastic guitar player, and band mate.. David Paton I believe actually played and recorded all the guitar parts and solos on Pilot’s first record.

Alan Parsons Project were one of my favorite groups. But before the age of Internet, and buying pirated cassettes overseas, they were an enigma to me. I knew they had, and used a bunch of different singers. As good as Ian and David were as musicians ( and singer ) in Pilot, it wasn’t a complete surprise to learn they were both on many of my favorite APP songs.

Ian’s musical contributions will live on forever. I suggest if you want a smile, check him out on the early Pilot videos of him hamming it up. He looked like he loved life, and was fun to hang out with, in addition to being a seriously great guitarist.

Youtube, after January, automatically played another Scottish band. The Bay City Rollers. Haven't heard them for decades. Well.

Seriously good harmonies. Dudes could sing. More quality pop that I may have pooh-poohed in my serious younger days.

Then youtube played our very own Sherbert. Playin' Howzat. More quality pop!!!

OK. He was WWTBLY with APP. Woah. Love that track. Rock History Music is already online with an obituary. Sad he never interviewed him.

Seems like he was well loved and respected.

Also worked with Jon Anderson on Song of Seven. On bass. Guitar.

Blinkin' hell! Just read the Guardian Obit and learned Dave Paton was also in Bay City Rollers. Really didn't know all that. Small world. 🤨

Just for one or so years. Early on. Before Pilot.

My Goodness. Have just gone down the rabbit-hole with The Rollers. Woah!!! Tawdry. By the manager!!!

Glad Dave Paton got out when he did. 😯

I would dedicate this acoustic version of one of my favorite Pilot songs, Just a Smile , that David Paton performed on a radio interview over ten years ago, to Ian. These guys had quite the musical adventure, and plenty of smiles on stage together.

We are all getting to the point when many of our favorites are going. People we never really knew, who gave us so much musical joy over the years. All we can do is try and introduce these folks, and their music to the next generation. If not us, who?

I remember getting into the Orange Grove albums. He has good catchy pop sensibilities.

He also played on Song of Seven.
Sometimes the lights all shining on me, other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me what a long strange trip it’s been.

Sad to hear this, I thought he was a really good guitarist. I never did hear when Alan parsons started doing "solo" albums in the 90s, he didn't have Bairnson in the band anymore.

                        Rip.
The bass on Song Of Seven never stood out for me, but the band Jon had then gelled really well and had a style of its own.
And Bairnson was part of that.
