    Steve Hillage

Steve Hillage UK tour dates for next spring.
I'll be doing Nottingham for sure. I saw him lots of times in the late 70s, on tours for Motivation Radio, Green, Open, Live Herald. On the Open tour (1979) the support act was Trevor Rabin, on whose resemblance to Donny Osmond many there remarked...
Sometimes the lights all shining on me, other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me what a long strange trip it’s been.

Does he [Hillage] play any Gong or early solo stuff still? I love Fish Rising and L, his contributions to Gong's Shamal too.

Last time he toured with his band (2019?), Gong played as support and I think they joined up for a few songs. I didn't go to that tour. I don't remember Hillage doing any Gong, or Khan either for that matter, in all the times I saw him back in the day. You're right, his contributions to Shamal, and to you Angel's Egg and You are terrific.
I'm seeing the current incarnation of Gong again here in Leicester in November. They're playing at the O2 Academy, which is part of the Leicester Uni Student's Union. Only holds about 400.

This could be interesting. I also saw Mr Hillage a couple of times, if not more back in the 70’s. I think the Roundhouse and The Rainbow. Always a good show. I saw Gong just the other night as they were appearing at the 2days Prog+1 festival in Veruno. There front man is a character to say the least.

Kavus Torabi. Formerly a member of the extraordinary Cardiacs in their latter days. He's also a member of Utopia Strong with Steve Davis. They'll be providing support on the Hillage tour. It's all very incestuous, in the best possible fashion...

I saw Hillage in Hyde Park on some weird free gig with Supercharge, Kiki Dee and Queen. He was brilliant. Saw Gong in Exeter with Gilli and Daevid - was impressed with how tight the band were, as I'd gone assuming it would be a nostalgia trip.

Discovered Hillage played guitar in a tourin' orchestral version of Hergest Ridge once. As well as TB I believe. Should investigate his music more. The only Gong song I know is A Wingful of Eyes. Plenty of Magic Dust sprinkled on that one. YES level great.

I forgot that Hillage and Moerlen are on the BBC film of Tubular Bells too. Oldifled [obviously], members of Soft Machine, Fred Frith [Henry Cow etc]

Definitely in my top ten of favourite guitarists ! ( probably Howe, Holdsworth, Fripp, Zappa and Halsall before him)

Not being sarcastic, genuinely don't know who Halsall is. I struggle with Zappa's later work, Holdsworth and Fripp great, and Howe obviously. Fred Frith, Pat Metheny, Santana, Terje Rypdal would all be in my list too.

The write up of Hillage's tour in Spetember's Prog magazine says 'The set will focus on the star's 70s output, from that debut Fish Rising, to L, Green and Motivation Radio, and there will be some surprises too'. Sounds great. Looks like they are giving away ebook copies of the Yes special magazine they produced too.

Madbear I highly recommend Ollie Halsall. You can hear his playing on 4 PATTO albums, on the second TEMPEST album where he replaced HOLDSWORTH and on many KEVIN AYERS albums...

Thanks. I must have heard him on the Ayers albums, but always good to have new things to seek out. Patto and Tempest here we come...
