    So Overlooked....

I was feeling nostalgic and went back to listen to some Glass Hammer (where I first found Davison, knowing he'd be a perfect fit Yes) and I just cannot believe how unknown this band is. They are wonderful musicians, had some great albums over the years, Fred Schendel and Steve Babb are their main guys but another aspect which I enjoyed was a female vocalist on many of their records called Susie Bogdanowicz.

Do check out some of their work, I recommend obviously the Davison albums If, Cor Cordium and Perilous. Also either version of The Inconsolable Secret and also Culture of Ascent.

I saw your post was somewhat overlooked, so…
Yes, impressive band. Really like their very wide array of styles.
I’ve 9 songs of theirs in my collection. May not seem much, but I’ve 0 of ELP for instance…

I like ELP - some songs especially. In fact, I think I'll take a break from Cut From The Stars and listen to ELP now. I don't think I have any Glass Hammer songs in my collection, but I'll give them a try, soon. (As long as they are not a band that only appeals to those who don't enjoy ELP!)

I wanted to like Glass Hammer. I listened to it a fair bit based on other people's raves. But for me, it was bland, Yes-wannabe, formulaic and utterly unremarkable prog.

funnily enough there is some heavily ELP inspired aspects in their music at times

So. Got IF cranked up. Funny to hear more new to my ears Juano. Shiftin' instrumental kaleidoscope of sound. Not too shabby. Juano bein' all philosophical and moody. Big guitar break. A curio for early Juano. Def.

Longer. Nice rollin' piano figure. Clever construction. Off beat drummin'. Synths. This is cruisy neo-prog.

OK. Another deep dive time. Comin' up...

IF is stunning to me. Tell me what you make of If the Sun - a masterpiece to these ears

I only have Cor Cordium in my collection. It's ok, but I found it to be kinda 'Yes flavored' music but it was like A-1 sauce without the steak. It needed more than just Yes sounds blanketed over a flimsy song base. I could be wrong too though, and may be missing something, and I should try listening again. It wasn't bad at all, just lacking something. I see they have many many albums. What do you recommend. I'm sure the best ones might not even have Jon Davison on them, he was only there briefly. Is 'If' like Cor Cordium?

in my opinion If is better than Cor Cordium. However if you find Cor Cordium merely ok I wouldn't expect miracles here, it does have a great epic though Inconsolable secret is another memorable album for me.

I remember purchasing If when it came out and I listened to it a lot at the time. I also picked up Cor Codium but that one didn't stick with me as much. I remember thinking the singer reminded me of Jon Anderson and I assumed that was no accident on the part of Babb - but I did not love the falsetto aspect of his singing method - which recently has become a bit of a topic in the context of Davison as a Yes singer.

I'm still so happy he made it to Yes after Benoits departure. It could have so easily been different, but it worked out perfectly from my perspective, which is why Heaven and Earth was such a huge bummer for me especially, I knew what he was capable of.

I’ve delved into Glass Hammer occasionally. I have IF. Pleasant album. I’m always amazed at how well Jon Davison fits in vocally with that band , and not as much with Yes, imo. It’s almost like he’s trying too hard with Yes to be perfect or something. I’ve also wondered why Jon Anderson hasn’t been asked to join Glass Hammer. Seems like he would fit in, and they’re certainly not adverse to a variety of vocalists.

ironically Jon Anderson did feature on Culture of Ascent prior to Jon Davison involvement in Glasshammer or Yes
