  • A Trick of the Tail vs Wind and Wuthering

Genesis was my entry into prog and remain perhaps my favourite on a core emotional level. Which is your preferred of these two and why?

To me its Trick, a great balance of the energetic, the majestic and the theatrical moments that made Genesis truly special.

My two favourite Genesis albums! Just giving the notch to Trick of the Tail.

That's an easy one! Trick. I'm joining Arno in them being my two out of my four favourite classic Genesis albums (Selling and Foxtrot being the rest), but I prefer Trick to Wind if even by a notch.

This is a tough one for me. Both are great, and Trick had the added burden of re-establishing the band with Collins as lead singer. Plus, it had some great songs on it. Wind also had great songs, and was Hackett's swan song with the band, which also makes it special. Amongst all the songs on these two albums, I think my favorite is probably Blood on the Rooftops on Wind...which maybe gives that album the nod?

I think Trick of the Tail is better. W&W tips the scale a bit too far one way for me to say it's better but I still love it.

Trick of the Tail, for me. Easily. A wonderful album. For some reason that I don't grasp, I find it much harder to engage with Wind and Wuthering. I have had Trick a lot longer, so perhaps that helps. But I don't understand my block with Wind. Can't explain my reason at all. (I do still listen, but I have the feeling that I am missing something.)

Trick of the Tail by a mile. I saw both album tours in London, and there was definitely a real energy about the Trick of the Tail album and tour, plus the fact they still played a lot of earlier songs. (Although the album seems a hybrid of Brand X and Genesis.) For me, Wind and Wuthering was the beginning of the end, the descent into pop. Neither of the albums come close to Selling England By The Pound, The Lamb Lies Down, Foxtrot, or Trespass.

Yes. Love Trick. Have not heard Wind. Will remedy today along with Renaissance's Scheherazade 😁

OK. Listenin' now. Nice. My jam Pastoral Pop-Prog. Swoony. Windblown. Allows the music to breathe. Beguile. Horizontal. Miles away from YES if you exclude The Rememberin'.

Your Own Special Way is earwormy and lovely.
Trick just has more memorable melodies and moments. Wot Gorilla points toward Duke?

OK. Wind and Wuthering needs a vote, so I’ll give it one. These were two great albums, and I was thrilled that Genesis was able to make great music after Peter Gabriel moved on. Selling England by the Pound is still my all time favorite by Genesis, but these two albums were spectacular. Unfortunately, it was a downhill ride from there to my ears.

These albums are like siblings- you must hear both as they are the body of work from the 4 man line up - (excluding Seconds out) W&W isnt quite as good as TotT but its very close- It has some stand out tracks including Blood on the Rooftops- and Unquiet through to In that Quiet Earth is one of the best Genesis ever did- I'm not quire as enamoured with Afterglow as others- Regrettably Genesis lost a lot with Hackett's departure from Genesis shortly after the tour. But then again perhaps had he not left ad Genesis not moved down a more accessible path they might have suffered the same on again off again fate as their contemporaries-

Tough call, but I'll side with W&W. 11th Earl of Mar, One for the Vine, and Unquiet Slumbers -> Quiet Earth -> Afterglow, plus Blood on the Rooftops.

As a diehard Genesis fan, it's Trick of the tail for me, no question. Even the "weakest" track, Robbery Assault & Battery, is great. Whenever people say Genesis was over when Gabriel left, I simply reply: Trick of the Tail. End of discussion.

W&W is great too, but it's just not as inspired, I think. It has some exceptional moments, however. I think my favorite Hackett "bit" in Genesis, apart from the Firth of Fifth solo, is his guitar solo at the end of "All In a Mouse's Night." Just a superb solo. I much prefer side 2 of that LP: Mouse's night, Blood on the Rooftops, the two instrumentals and Afterglow, that's terrific stuff. But Your Own Special Way always puts me to sleep. I know a lot of people like One for The Vine but I never really cared for that one.

Still, both albums are simply exceptional.

I think Hackett's departure was inevitable and in the long run, was good for both. It's clear that Hackett felt constrained by the fact that he was one guy in a quartet. He had done a solo album and he realized that Genesis could never be a proper outlet to his writing. Collins mentioned in a video interview that his compositions were not very well received by the others. There's a famous story of Genesis trying "Please don't touch" at a rehearsal and Collins ending up saying "I can't get into that stuff".

These are my 2 personal favorites of the whole catalog. Of the 2 I tend to listen to "Wind" more often but there is really no wrong choice here. 5 stars easily for both.
