Genesis Earned $230 Million In 2022!

    From https://consequence.net/2023/02/gene...ghest-earning/...

That's a lot of money! Some interesting names on this list including the creators of South Park and The Simpsons which I was definitely surprised by. I imagine Taylor Swift will rocket to the top in 2023.

    The full list:

    Highest-Paid Entertainers of 2022:
    01. Genesis – $230M
    02. Sting – $210M
    03. Tyler Perry – $175M
    04. Trey Parker & Matt Stone – $160M
    05. James L. Brooks & Matt Groening – $105M
    06. Brad Pitt – $100M
    07. The Rolling Stones – $98M
    08. James Cameron – $95M
    09. Taylor Swift – $92M
    10. Bad Bunny – $88M

Of course Genesis has to divide it into three, while Sting gets to keep everything 😉

I'll assume that these figures are net earnings. It probably doesn't change the rankings much, if it changes them at all.

If Sting tours, he has expenses which include a band. When Genesis tours, they also have to hire touring musicians. Touring musicians presumably do NOT make the same sort of money that Sting or the members of Genesis do. Touring expenses add up, sometimes being quite a large hunk o' baggage. Pink Floyd LOST money on the original THE WALL tour. ELP had to fire the orchestra during THE WORKS tour.

And I'll assume that the net earnings includes record, dvd, and streaming sales. I've heard that touring income has surpassed audio rights, but I don't even know if Sting toured in 2022. Evidently Sting made the list on the strength of the $210 million sale of his catalog. It also mentions that Taylor Swift made the Top Ten without touring. I imagine that she made be at the top of the list for next year's list.

The Stones DID tour, and also have an extensive back catalog stretching back to the early 1960s.

I'm rather surprised that Paul McCartney didn't make the list.

This amount is probably related to the sale of their catalogue.

What's interesting in that list is that it barely includes artists under 40... It's mostly folks between the ages of 50 and 80.

Seems to me they technically earned another 300 million as they sold their catalogue.

The article mentions that 27$M was earned from touring and the rest seems to come from the sale of the catalogue. The 300M$ figure included Phil's solo music. I doubt Genesis earned 530$M in a year.
