I've listened to it that way. I can't stand Collins' goofy singing on Behind the Lines, but can handle the rest. Duke's End is the best part for me.

The band decided against sequencing the tracks this way on the album, partly to avoid comparisons to their 23-minute track "Supper's Ready" from Foxtrot . (Wikipedia)

However they did perform those songs in the original intended sequence on tour.

I personally find the songs working (even) better that way. See what it does for you.

That's right. The French artist who designed all the figures on the cover said they were "Alberts".

I'll take a crack at this - I am a big fan of the earlier work:

    1. Selling England By the pound
    2. Trick of a Tail
    3. Lamb Lies Down
    4. Nursery Cryme
    5. Foxtrot
    6. Wind and Wuthering
    7. Duke
    8. ABACAB
    9. Genesis
    10. Calling All Stations
    11. Trespass

And then I find the rest of their output frustrating - a meld of some really nice bits with some truly awful bits.

I quite like Duke's End - sort of the entire album in a nutshell.

Don't much care for the rest. I like the actual song ABACAB, but not the album. Duke is awful. I know I'm in the minority on that opinion. Can't stand And Then There Were Three, and the stuff before Hackett and Phil was bland in comparison.

I like Genesis as much as Yes, so I'll play along with the "favourite" albums list:

My top 3 are easy to list:
    1) Trick Of The Tail
    2) Foxtrot
    3) Trespass (my pick for the most underrated prog LP ever)

After that, it's a bit trickier. Basically, I like them all the same, that is a *lot*:
    4) Nursery Cryme
    5) Genesis
    6) Selling England By The Pound
    7) Duke
    8) Wind and Wuthering

Then, the albums that have some good stuff on them, but that I don't like all the way through. (I was never a big fan of The Lamb and, I know, for many Genesis/prog fans, this is complete heresy, but what can I say?):
    9) The Lamb lies down in Broadway
    10) We Cant Dance
    11) Abacab
    12) Invisible Touch

    Then, it's the weak ones:
    13) Calling All Stations
    14) ...and Then There Were Three

And I've never been able to listen all the way through this one:

    15) Genesis to Revelation (zzzzzzzzzzzzz...)
The first side of the Lamb is great, but it does sort of start to drop off into plot-connecting filler shortly after. FGTR has some pretty good songs on it, and while it obviously still isn’t on the level of their early ‘70s output, I’d still take it over We Can’t Dance any day.

    4) Going For The One - Yes

a very refreshing list I have to say, nice to see the Phil era get some love- despite my personal preference for Peter largely. Though I think it was best for both sides when he left- Genesis went onto to commercial success and Peter had a remarkable solo career of his own.

Interesting in that Trick Of The Tail is a step back to Selling England by the pound, but in the best way. 12 string guitars are more featured again, it has some of the feel of pre-Lamb albums. The Lamb on the other hand is closer to Wind & Wuthering or even Duke in its instrumentation. The keyboards seem more cutting edge, and gone are some of the more pastoral, woodsy bits you find on other albums - with the exception of maybe Cuckoo Cocoon, which has that flute you never hear again after Gabriel left.

Wind & Wuthering traditionally is my favorite Genesis album or second favorite. Love that autumnal, romantic atmosphere - you can almost feel a light wind or see the brown and orange leaves snappin' off the trees when you listen to it. But yeah, a more intense and heavier album. I suppose with Wind & W, it was like Rush with 'Hemispheres' - they went as far as they could go in that direction with the heavy conceptual themes and intense instrumentation, while others were already starting to scale back. They were like 'Ok, enough of that'. What came after was differently focused: ATTWT or Permanent Waves.

But I would say Steve Hackett on W&W is him coming out of his shell. What you hear on there is the Hackett of Spectral Morning, Defector etc. Before that, he was just the guitarist in that band. As good as his contributions to those were, with W&W you can hear him as one of the personalities along with the other three equally. It finally was a 4-way split, though a little too late and he was gone from the band just as he was 'becoming' the Hackett we know now.
