Most people like the album they first heard by a band best. In this case I’m no different as a friend introduced me to Genesis when Trick of the Tail was released and this is my number one album from them by some way.

My sister Clare always had Genesis albums playing in her car. The early ones don't leap out to me as much as TOTT + ATTWT. Those 2 get played on my road trips to visit her. Dreamy pastoral pop-prog ( not too far from TQ. See opening of MTME )

2. Trespass (only the drumming lets it down a little bit, but I love it nonetheless)
3. Selling England By The Pound (it would be top, but The Battle Of Epping Forest and Aisles of Plenty haven't aged too well lyrically IMO)

5. Nursery Cryme
6. Wind and Wuthering
7. Invisible Touch (I know lots of people don't like it, but it's when the trio finally stopped trying to be the remnants of an old prog band and became a really slick pop act)
8. We Can't Dance

I don't like most of their other post-Hackett efforts, and I've never got on with The Lamb apart from a few undoubtedly lovely moments.

I am different. I was born in '73, so when I got to know Genesis it was through the hitparade and the Invisible Touch album which spawned so many top 40 hits. Still love that album, but my favourite album now, like yours, is Trick of the Tail. '76-'80 is my favourite Genesis period.

They lost me after the above sequence. Fantastic band for around 15 years (to my ears, your opinion may differ).

Here's how I rank the Genesis studio albums for my own personal taste, from the bottom to the top:

15. From Genesis To Revelation - they couldn't play too well yet but some of the songwriting is already there.
14. Calling All Stations - underrated, transitional album for an era they didn't transition to. A follow-up would have been interesting.
13. Genesis - a little lackluster(and no title, I call it 'Shapes'), but does have one of their best epics in Home By The Sea
12. And Then There Were Three - kinda 'Wind & Wuthering Lite'. Same romanto keyboards and tesxtures, just slimmed down a bit.
11. Nursery Cryme - dodgy early production, vox on Salmacis too low in the mix, otherwise I'd rank higher
10. We Can't Dance - better than you remember, Fading Lights all time powerful classic
09. Foxtrot - live versions of these songs from any era were so much better
08. Duke - an album much like Yes' Drama, in that it's been given a reassessment in recent years, by the band themselves as well. Fine album.
07. Trick Of The Tale - Adventurous classic, 4-pc Genesis was short lived and somewhat overlooked.
06. Abacab - punchy and bright, drums in particular are better than ever, quirky songs, I even like 'Who Dunnit' since I like stuff like Devo as well...
05. Trespass - an early September-type album, pastoral - something magic about Trespass that puts it above other classics for me
04. Invisible Touch - 80's masterwork - the hits, the synths, the Miami Vice clothes, Genesis commercial heyday
03. Lamb - the blueprint for all the later neo-prog bands to study and aspire to. This was 'The Wall' before The Wall. Melodic and dramatic, nothing like it.
02. Wind & Wuthering - autumnal and romantic, dreamy album. Steve Hackett ups his game here, this is almost a trial run for Spectral Mornings
01. Selling England By The Pound - definitive album from 5-pc band, all 5 members firing on all cylinders. The playing and songwriting are suberb. Best album.

Like with any rank list, the entries in the middle move up and down on the list, this could be a different ranking on another day.

My favorites overall are Lamb and Duke. I am also fond of Wind & Wuthering, Trick of the Tail and Invisible Touch. Even then, with post-Duke it's more of a matter of liking part of an album, in some cases less than others. I like about half of Abacab and Shapes each.

My introduction to Genesis was Genesis Live in 1973. It was a budget+priced album, and I bought it from ASDA on my way home from school, using my saved-up dinner-money as usual. It's still my favourite Genesis album.
I like Foxtrot and Selling England pretty much equally, followed by Nursery Cryme, them Trespass.

Now it gets a little sticky: I'm really not that enamoured of The Lamb. I never have been, despite seeing them in Coventry on the Lamb Tour.
Trick of the Tail I like more than The Lamb I think. Wind and Wuthering, being the last album with Steve Hackett, is where my Genesis listening and my interest in them ceases. Once they stopped setting Lewis Carroll et al to music, as it were, they quickly became very, very ordinary and dull.

I hold onto the hope that more live stuff from the Foxtrot and Selling England era will be released, in particular the rest of the concert/s that make up Genesis Live.

So good that one never stop to learn, from decade to decade I more and more got aware how dense, shimmering and cool And Then There Were Three is. The Gabriel-years I always found a bit stiff, with one exception:

I don't think any band has a better four album run than Duke through Invisible Touch.

I like the earlier stuff, but the quality of intelligent prog-pop put out by those guys in the early eighties is unsurpassed. Gabriel surely found his stride after leaving the band but then went into a prolonged period of procrastination. They were all done by the early nineties, but what a legacy.

I got to perform the entire album a few years back, and learning it from the inside out drove home what a fantastic piece of work it really is!

Trespass is possibly my number 2 favorite album ever (only behind CTTE). It’s criminally overlooked by most Genesis fans, it seems.
