  • Genesis' 180 studio songs ranked

Ultimate Classic Rock took it upon them to rank all Genesis studio tracks, 180 of them.

What I like about the ranking is that the top 20 doesn't focus on one particular era. Every era gets its due, and being a Genesis "wholist" that suits me fine. I think I can agree on quit a few songs in that top 20 (although I have no idea what "No Reply at All" is doing in the no. 10 spot).

Anyhow, this is my personal top 20:

    20. Tonight, Tonight, Tonight
    19. Supper's Ready
    18. The Carpet Crawlers
    17. Turn it on Again
    16. Entangled
    15. One for the Vine
    14. The Cinema Show
    13. The Musical Box
    12. Domino
    11. Home by the Sea/Second Home by the Sea
    10. Duke's Travels/Duke's End
    09. Land of Confusion
    08. Mama
    07. No Son of Mine
    06. In the Cage
    05. Los Endos
    04. Blood on the Rooftops
    03. Dancing With the Moonlit Knight
    02. Firth of Fifth
    01. Dance on a Volcano

No. 20 position was a toss up between Tonight, Tonight, Tonight and Abacab. If it were live versions, Abacab would probably have won. And yes, I know, sacrilege that I don’t consider Supper's Ready the holy grail of Genesis 😉

So what are your top 20 Genesis songs?

It'd take a lot of thought for me to come up with a Genesis Top 20, as it's been quite a long while since I've listened to them. So instead I'll throw you a curve ball and name one special Genesis song, not necessarily my all-time favorite, but one that holds a special place in the heart: Snowbound from And Then There Were Three. That was the first Genesis album I ever heard. Not only was it all fresh and new to me, but because I had never heard anything else by them, there was nothing for it to pale in comparison against. Anyway, I found Snowbound particularly captivating, lyrically light and fanciful yet somewhat dark at the same time, and with gorgeous keyboard textures backing the vocals. I still think of that song, and play that album, every winter when we get our first big snow.

Too lazy to come up with a top list, but it would have to include Me And Sarah Jane. My favorite
          Tony Banks Genesis song.

That is quite a diverse list. And I don't think you'll find many who will put three Calling All Stations songs in their top 20.

My memory isn't good enough to rank 20, but my first four would definitely be:

                  Firth of Fifth
Duke Suite (consists of 5 separate songs)

                            20. Undertow

I realize this is a kind of bizarre list. Some would probably be different if I devoted more time to it, but I have to admit this is at least broadly representative of the Genesis material that I like best.
"A lot of the heavier conversations I was having with Chris toward the end were about his desire for this thing to go forward. He kept reiterating that to me. [...] He kept telling me, 'No matter what happens, Yes needs to continue moving forward and make great music. So promise me that that's something you want to do.'. And I have to keep making music. It's just what I do. [...] I'm a fan of the band and I want to see it thrive and that means new music." -Billy Sherwood
