What if ELPowell got a FFHRT make over?

I am a huge ELP fan and when ELPowell came out- I thought it was a great return to form- albeit with that 80s sound which is now rather dated. I was thinking that if the master multi-tracks still exist whether CP would be interested in doing a Trevor Horn and redoing the drums a la FFH Return Trip?- No disrespect to Cozy is intended- He is a great drummer and I tend to think played with great restraint on the album. If you listen to some of the demos and live recordings from the tour he seemed much busier- perhaps more like CP- The album could do with a remix and re-processing but if you were to do that it would be interesting to hear what CP would do- preferably in an ELP rather than an Asia style which I think was evident on BM and ITHS. In this was it would really then be an ELP album. Clearly Trevor was the producer and cowriter on FFH so is wasn't artistically an issue for him to redo the vocals and some of the lyrics- However there was some tension around the ELPowell album- I recall reading CP referred to them as Emerson Lake and Petulant for not wanting to wait the extra few months for him to be contractually able to do the album. So on principle he may dismiss the idea out of hand. Would be interesting though!!

Not a bad idea. I did read somewhere that Palmer liked the song Touch And Go and was the one who insisted that they resurrect the song to play live/rerecord for the Return Of The Manticore box set when ELP reformed in the 90's. Carl's still around, so it could be done. Depends on his interest in doing such a project, but it would sound great. Cozy was great too, but I'd buy a ELPowell Return Trip. Of course the album would have to be renamed Touch & Go or The Score or something.

It's not too uncommon for a band to rerelease an album with something replaced. Neo-prog band Pendragon rereleased one of their 90's albums with the drums replaced by their current drummer because they didn't like the original drum sound or production or something. Frank Zappa would replace tracks - you would hear one of his fusion-y bass players from the 80's superimposed into one of his original Mothers albums from the late 60's. Happens all the time sometimes. Too late to get Greg Lake for 3 To The Power Of Three Return Trip though.

Picked up the ELPowell vinyl yesterday for $3 in my local record store. Haven’t listened to it yet but I remember it feeling almost like ELP’s ABWH to me when I listened to the album online previously.

ELPowell is a fantastic album but suffers from horrible 80"s production. That would be a great one for a full on Wilson remix. I saw that tour and it was just as enjoyable as any ELP show I saw, if not more. Powell was just an unbelievable musician.

Agreed. I really didn't enjoy the vocals on "3" at all.

I heard the song "Learning to Fly" on Deep Tracks the other day - but they introduced it as Emerson Lake and Palmer. It's been many years since I had listened to this record - so I was a bit confused and I thought "this must be Emerson Lake and Powell" because of the drum sound

I'd be happy to hear a revised version of this record - I think if some producer/engineer stakes out a place as the "go-to" fixer of eighties drum sounds - that person could make a good living re-visting a host of albums from that era.

The sound quality of that ELPowell album - very shrill and 'tinny'. Not the best 80's production by a yard. The material is great and closer to what fans of the first 5 albums probably wanted, just the sound lets it down. Still love it though. If Steve Wilson and Carl Palmer want to get their hands on it, I'd buy it for sure. If not, I liked the original for what it was. I saw the tour as well, and it was just as ELP as anything, Pirates was outstanding. Sad to know that the entire band is dead.

Actually I liked the '3' album a lot and thought the production/sound at least was better than the ELPowell album. I didn't mind Robert Berry for what he was, that kind of pop/rock singer. it was like Bryan Adams fronting ELP. But if you got Lake in there instead, you could ELP-up that album to the highest degree. To The Power Of Three would have been even more bold. But in general, I liked the 3 album. I saw ELPowell live but missed 3 because I was too young to get into the clubs.

What's a shame is that after the In The Hot Seat debacle, Greg Lake never released another album. Emerson did stuff, Palmer had Asia, but Greg didn't do anything ever again. Sure, some solo shows, but it would have been nice to get a solo album or two from him between 1997 and 2016.

As producer Horn was able to have access to the master tapes for Fly From Here, but Palmer was merely a sometime band member, with no input at all on "ELPowell", with no producer credit. It wasn't even an ELP album. With both Emerson and Lake gone, I don't even know who has "ownership" of Love Beach.

If Carl was even interested in doing such a thing (and I don't see why he'd want to bother, as he has no songwriting credits on the album), he'd have to get permission from the Emerson and Lake estates, the record company, then find the master tapes, then actually pay for the re-recording sessions. Carl has nothing to prove, and no real reason to do this, other from the obvious artistic one.

Yes I realise this- actually Yes had to wait for the ownership to revert to them so TH could do it. ELPowell was released on Polydor as I recall which is part of the Universal Group- I'd say they still "own" the rights and if the multis exist- they would have them. I understand your point re Carl's interest- but its the only thing out there that is 2/3rd of classic ELP, with some great writing and when GL still had a pretty good voice. Carl could redo the drums and probably claim producer status- who knows he might even have a unreleased track he could put on it-There might be more recorded for the Album that was edited out- who knows - As as legitimate as his proposal of playing along with footage of KE & GL- perhaps more so-
