Alan Stivell - Renaissance of the Celtic Harp (1971)

    1990 CD reissue.

Arrived this morning. I remember seeing a late night TV concert in the 70s featuring Stivell. Beautiful music.
Sometimes the lights all shining on me, other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me what a long strange trip it’s been.

Listening to Ratt's eponymous 1999 album. 100% guilty pleasure, this band.

I do this demented thing, where I cycle thru late-period works of the bands I collect, just to air those suckers out and give them their fairest shake possible. Because they're a challenge for sure!

I've got Phish's Big Boat on the record player (side 1 hit the spot honestly) and I dug out The Quest to give that one another go at some point soon.

I also break it up with live albums I rarely spin, to get in some easier songs for my own mental health lol.

I'm glad I do this crazy exercise, and my kids bust on me for sort of listening to bad music on purpose. But I do it to find appreciation that I'd otherwise miss out on, you know?

No surprise for me at this point that later works of rock artists are full of things to be sad about, so I'm trying to mine the gems despite that reality.

4-Song Playlist for a Saturday Evening

Led Zeppelin: Led Zeppelin (1969): Side One

        Good Times Bad Times
        Babe I’m Gonna Leave You
        You Shook Me
        Dazed and Confused

Actually, the album was recorded in 1968, prior to the band even having a recording contract; guitarist Jimmy Page and band manager Peter Grant ponied up the money for the 36 hours of studio time, and Page produced.

The album was mixed by Glyn Johns. Beatles fans will recognize the name of the Beatles’ engineer (and default producer) on the White Album, and the man that in 1969 created three different versions of the Get Back album before it was shelved, then ultimately given to Phil Spector to assemble instead.

Surprisingly enough, for an album that is now considered one of the defining moments in Rock and Roll history. it received a ton of pretty negative review when it was first released.

Good Times Bad Times kicks off the album, with an oddball heavy metal Top 40 radio-friendly vibe. It was also Zeppelin’s first single, and peaked at Number 80 on the Billboard Hot 100. The bass riff played by John Paul Jones is pretty complex.

In 2007 Godsmack released a cover of the song that got to Number 8 on the charts.

Babe I’m Gonna Leave You was developed from the Joan Baez version of the song, and was originally credited to "Traditional, arr. by Jimmy Page", leading to songwriter Anne Bredon suing for copyright infringement, and ultimately getting her songwriting credit, as well as substantial back-payment of royalties in 1990.

Willie Dixon’s You Shook Me is a heavy, pummeling bit of post-psychedelic blues-rock, but is quite similar to Jeff Beck’s version released just months prior. Jones plays a nifty organ solo, but it should be noted that he also played organ on the Jeff Beck version as well. Vocalist Robert Plant also contributes a harmonica solo. This is one of the first tracks to use the reverse-echo production technique. There’s a fairly famous Call-and-Response between Page and Plant near the end.

Dazed and Confused is yet another song with dubious band credentials: Jake Holmes filed a copyright infringement lawsuit in 2010. In 2012 the suit was dismissed after an undisclosed settlement was agreed to, although the song’s credit is now listed as "By Page – Inspired by Jake Holmes."

One of the most notable aspects of the song is the use of a bow on the electric guitar.

Marquee Moon and some Television live recordings ahve been on heavy rotation here, along with a 50p charity shop best of The Monkees in the car. I'd forgotten how great and psychedelic the Monkees were!

                First time listen.

They don't mind a quiet start to their albums do they?
1994 and still very spacey. Then Gilmour's trademark guitar soars and trademarks then every 7 or 8 songs.
Now as some know, not the biggest PF afficianado. Thought Animals was before DSOTM. Doh. Listened to their early Syd stuff. Far out, Maaan.

Happened to have put this album on today myself! Not my favorite Floyd but perhaps a shade better than the prior Momentary Lapse of Reason LP. I have kind of a rickety blue vinyl single-disc Brazilian import I bought years ago.

Actually kinda won me over towards the end. Came home with a wet sail. Some nice songs and singin'. I was actually gettin' tired of Gilmour's trademark sound.

Will give MLOR a go tomorrow 😚

                      Stevie Wonder

At Grammys. Slimmer and glowin' with health. He rips it on the funky clavinet. Saw him back in 1980 at the Sydney Showground. Best concert of my life apart from seein' 5 English gents in 2003. But that's another story.

                      He is defyin' age! 😍

So do I. Took awhile. Slowly revealed it's charms. You have to be open to it. The Game is the most open and vulnerable song in the canon. Has a sunny, Mediterranean vibe at times. IWAWK. For eg.

To Ascend is just beautiful. To some it is a 3 legged dog. But they are the very ones to adopt 🐶

Just woken up. Excuse the ramblin'. ☕

                            OK. First time listen.

Bit more like it. Learnin' To Fly is a stone cold classic. Great song. Dogs of War. Dramatic paranoia the Floydies do so well. Gilmour sings with a growly voice. Nice sax from Tom Scott.

                            Wonder what Waters thought?

OK. Have heard No More Turnin' Away. Another decent song. Could imagine U2 or Simple Minds doin' it. Or Marillion.

                            BREAKIN' NEWS

Oh. What a day to choose the first Post-Waters album to react to. Seems there is a twitter war kickin' off between Mrs Gilmour Polly Samson and Roger. Even David has chosen sides. Gonna get ugly. Lawyers at twenty paces. Thread in Steve Hoffman Music Forum. Now closed after 6 pages.
