  • Current Listening...?

The usual mixed bag for me today:

    Gryphon - Reinvention (2017)
Suzanne Vega - Solitude Standing (1987))
JS Bach - Missae (1990 recording, Collegium Vocals, Ghent, dir. Philippe Herreweghe)
David Crosby - Here If You Listen (2019)
Sometimes the lights all shining on me, other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me what a long strange trip it’s been.

Goodies waiting for me from Amazon when I got in from the (dismal) display of Leicester against an imperious Chelsea. Along with a boxset of Handel's Op.3 & Op.6 Concerti Grossi and a CD of Hugo Wolf's Italian Songbook, I got Taylor Swift's re-recorded Red - Taylor's Version so I'm spinning that just now. It's gorgeous!

          Henry Cow - Leg End
          Hedvig Mollestad - Ekhidna (currently)

I've been out for my COVID booster shot, kicking my way through autumn's golden gown....

Following the tragic, sudden death of Big Big Train frontman and vocalist David Longdon last weekend, I listened to BBT's Folklore album while I was out, followed by Grand Tour on returning home. Both wonderful, lovely albums.

A little Phish now, Undermind from 2004, the last studio album prior to their hiatus.

No sign of any ill effects from either today's Pfizer booster (previous shots were Oxford AstraZeneca), or the standard flu shot I got yesterday. In fact, I don't think I've experienced any adverse reactions to any vaccination.

Good to hear. I'm due the AZ booster in a month or so. Went with AZ earlier despite clotting concerns and now seemed to have backed the right horse in effectiveness. According to my GP.

Gave Animals by PF another spin. Quite like it. It flows nicely and is atmospheric. Has inspired me to return to Mike Oldfield's Ommadawn for another full and warm immersion.

                  I love Ommadawn!
His sister Sally is one of the singers on it. I recently got a copy of her solo album Water-Bearer on CD. Used to have it in vinyl many moons ago. It's gorgeous!

Yeah, as I get older it becomes clearer what I always loved and perhaps why. A mate of mine at school had Ommadawn in his mum's collection and we would play it on lazy afternoons in front of the fire. Canberra can get cold in winter. Been a longtime fan of Yes thanks to my older siblings. Early seventies was a time of classic inspired rock musicals and concept albums. Being of Irish ancestry had always had keening music in the house. Folk and rebel songs. So the day I heard Harry's Game by Clannad. Was hooked. Van Morrison. Kate Bush and her brothers, U2 and esp the Unforgettable Fire. Atmospheric rock that seemed salty with the Atlantic Ocean whipping in. Celtic influences. Often spend the twilight watching Clannad Live in Christ Church Cathedral. Tradsongs and quasi Celtic Prog. Cranberries. The Corrs. Sinead O'Connor. Will checkout more Oldfield albums. He seems to revisit most.

It's a Van de Graaf Generator day: A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers for starters. And Terje Rypal's Whenever I Seem So Far Away album to follow.

Nice to see someone else like Undermind. I think it’s a really great album. Since that one, I thought Fuego was really good, too.

Lately I have been soaking in the Quest along with the two Conspiracy albums. Definitely on a big Yes kick thanks to the new album and all the discussion around it. Steve Howe’s Time is getting a lot of play as well.

Listened to Fragile this morning as I'd read it's the 50th anniversary of its release. The Wilson remix.

Telephone appointment with my GP was bracketed by some Vivaldi (La Stravaganza concertos), just in case I had to put the doctor on hold for any reason....

Moved on to Big Big Train again, The Underfall Yard (remixed 2CD version)

Suzanne Vega - Close Up Vol.3: States of Being
Dead Can Dance - Spiritchaser Egg - The Polite Force

Right deltoid bloody sore after booster jab yesterday. Felt like I'd been hit with a cricket stump. All good now though.
