    Angela Hewitt

"As the brain ages, this becomes even more difficult but necessary. I think that’s why older pianists on the whole (Martha Argerich being the exception) tend to play slower than the young ones, to whom speed often seems the ultimate goal. It’s also why, as an audience member, we are more disturbed by fast playing as we age. It’s just too much for our slower brains to process."

I've been a fan of Angela Hewitt for a long time, heard her live half a dozen times in orchestral concerts and solo recitals, and met her several times. A lovely, gracious and patient person, always happy to meet fans and sign CDs and programmes. My favourite interpreter of Bach, by a mile. She writes all of her own CD booklet notes too, and in themselves are a rich source of insight into the music and the process of giving it life.
From eavesdropping to iPads and beetles to Bach, the pianist reflects on the extraordinary feats of memory required of concert soloists, and how she continues to exercise that muscle
Sometimes the lights all shining on me, other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me what a long strange trip it’s been.
