    Suzanne Vega

Just back in from seeing Suzanne Vega live at De Montfort Hall. Wowzers!

And folk-singer Sam Lee in support was bloody good too, so I bought his CD and got it signed. Listening to that now. Gorgeous!
Sometimes the lights all shining on me, other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me what a long strange trip it’s been.

I see she's still rockin' that scary hat....

I've seen her three times and she always puts on a great show. One of those shows was a double header with Duncan Sheik. They actually performed a couple of songs together. What a great evening!

She always connects well with her audience during concerts. Some of her stories are pretty funny too. I'll always remember the one about her mom and step dad giving their cat a Viking funeral on the East River (in NYC). Well, they didn't set the raft on fire, but they did wash and blowdry the dead cat first. To be clear, I adore cats and am made unhappy about any suggestion of mistreatment toward them, but they do die, and the thought of kitty floating on a little barge downstream past the iconic New York skyline struck me as surreal.

Lots of stories in the show, and she's funny! Really good night out.

“Left of Center” is a classic imo.

Saw her at the Birmingham Odeon back in the mid 1980's.

                I'm old...

I forgot to mention, at the first concert I saw her, she did an autograph session, so I met her and got her autograph.

I would have liked that, and originally I'd taken a half-day from work to try and catch her pre-show in the afternoon, but the unfortunate circumstances of this week (two funerals) have rather taken over my time.
Oddly, there was no Suzanne Vega merch at all, though there were CDs and LPs for the support act, folk-singer and song-collector Sam Lee. I bought his most recent release last night and he was on his stall in the foyer during the interval signing stuff. Lovely, open, friendly guy, totally genuine. He has a book out too, called The Nightingale (link to an review article attached) which I've just ordered. The CD, Old Wow, is just gorgeous. He's been involved in the music for a forthcoming film as well, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, starring Jim Broadbent, which opens in UK cinemas at the end of April. I'll be looking out for that. It's based on a book which I had heard of but hadn't gotten around to buying/reading.
The folk singer offers a lyrical homage to the endangered migrant bird whose uniquely beautiful song he has been communing with up close for years

The time I got her autograph, she had merch, because what she signed for me was a CD. The second two times, I don't recall any merch. I would attribute that to the venues, as at one of them I've never seen merch at any show, but at the other, upon occasion there's been merch.
