Been using i tunes for many years now for my music collection but recently having more and more problems getting it to synchronise with my phone.
Are there alternatives anyone here could recommend?

I’m very heavily into the Apple ecosystem, but for my music collection I use iBroadcast. You can upload your entire library, stream it and it doesn’t try to “match” your files, which is great if you care about sound quality, the right mixes and the right mastering. The free version only streams at 128kbps. The paid version is $44.99 per year or $3.99 per month and gives you the ability to stream files at your original bitrate. My library is at about 61k tracks. I upload new stuff from my laptop, maintain my physical backup drives and I’m done, no syncing at all. If I get a new phone I just install the app and sign in.

I remember when Apple first released iTunes and thinking while I am not a fan of Apple products and haven't been since my days with the Apple II, I appreciated that Apple made a version for Windows PCs so I jumped right on it. I ripped every CD I could get my hands on and I even got an iPod or two over the years.

But then Apple started playing games with their charging connector that made the iPod accessories I had obsolete so I began to plan my switch. I have Amazon Prime and it has music services but I didn't like how it all works so the next place I went was Google which back then meant Google Music, and that was good for awhile but then Google switched to YouTube Music which caused some troubles which we have worked through and we love it!

YT Music has all of the content that iTunes has, or at least all of the content I care about, so pretty much any new album that comes out can be downloaded on day one. We also have lots of other music, like live shows (thank you Forgotten Yesterdays, BandCamp, and archive.org!) and YTM has a wonderful upload feature so you can pull it right in. YTM works great with Sonos and all of our bluetooth needs. The one feature missing from YTM is the ability to edit the metadata for uploaded songs and albums but it's easily done with a PC prior to uploading.

I hope this helps and good luck with your search!

My new iPhone SE will not synch with my older version of iTunes.

I cannot update my iTunes because I am resisting updating my OS.

I'm resisting updating my OS because my DAW (Protools 9) and the driver for my Digital Audio Interface Driver are old. Protools 9 is already operating way past its recommended OS, and occasionally has "glitches", causing reboots. The Driver for my Interface, a rather pricey 8-channel piece of hardware, is on its LAST version, and no further versions will be created as Operating Systems keep updating. I chatted with an M-Audio tech online, and it's their opinion that I've gotten my fair use out of my Interface, and tough luck.

Furthermore, Protools no longer "sells" it's software, it "leases" it to you at a yearly price. You get better software that automatically updates as updates are created, as long as you continue to pay them.

Amusingly, my old iPhone 5 DOES still synch with my iMac, even though the sim card is in my new phone. I use it nowadays only for its iTunes app. I was forced to upgrade my iPhone though, as other apps would automatically update and make themselves incompatible with the old OS on my old iPhone. Apps would sometimes lose features, or simply not open.

MusicBee for Windows, Musicolet for Android.

Of course, a setup like that would involve more direct management than something like iTunes in terms of making changes and copying things from device to device.

"A lot of the heavier conversations I was having with Chris toward the end were about his desire for this thing to go forward. He kept reiterating that to me. [...] He kept telling me, 'No matter what happens, Yes needs to continue moving forward and make great music. So promise me that that's something you want to do.'. And I have to keep making music. It's just what I do. [...] I'm a fan of the band and I want to see it thrive and that means new music." -Billy Sherwood

I'll be using my Ipod classic at the pool again today. I read they are going for up to $20,000 now if someone wants to make me an offer. I upgraded the storage on it a few years ago. It keeps my phone free from all of the storage issues, wearing down the battery, etc.

Prime Music and YouTube Premium is all I have, all I need for portable listening, Still mostly physical media at home.
As I'm working at home today, in my kitchen, I'm using Prime on my tablet through a pair of Bluetooth speakers. Sounds fine. I've always gone with Android/Google devices but I didn't get my first smartphone till 2012. If fact that was my first mobile phone of any kind. I was given an old reconditioned Mac laptop by a friend at the beginning of last year for job applications, but I couldn't get on with it at all.

Sometimes the lights all shining on me, other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me what a long strange trip it’s been.
