  • New Patrick Moraz Interview

Hi, folks! Here's a fresh chat with Patrick Moraz I think a lot of you will enjoy. I suspect most prog fans first became aware of him via Yes' Relayer album. He had an amazing life before he even hooked up with Yes though, and this chat sheds a lot of light on it. Did you know he opened for John Coltrane? Or that he knew Salvador Dali? Just two stories he shares. Of course we talk about his time with Yes, at the height of their powers and popularity. The Yes solo albums come up, including his Story of I album. We discuss his keyboard rigs over the years too. He will be performing at Progstock 2023 this year. My co-host is my friend, fest founder Thomas Palmieri. We spend a few minutes looking at this year's lineup and discuss Patrick's solo performance that's in the works before turning the mic over to Patrick. Hope you enjoy this chat as much as we did!

Thorough chat. Patrick is quite the Silver Fox with his silver statement necklace. 😉

Very bright, great recall. Fit and full of vim and vigour. Says he was very friendly with Steve durin' his YES years. And Alan.

        Sean goes there :

Did Jon play all the music on Olias?

What does Patrick think of Wakeman's G4T1?

How did Patrick know Salvador Dali?

Another Yes keyboardist with some troublesome behavior in the past.
          Not on Yes' payroll.

I am not sure what you are alluding to, could you expand?

Interesting interview. A little frustrating at times as he meanders somewhat and doesn’t always answer the question. Having said that he has some amazing story’s to tell and is engaging. Oh and he looks so well.

                What’s Moraz’s verdict on Olias?

I really enjoyed this Gary. Several things struck me. One was Patrick talking about the artistic frisson between Jon and Chris and how that kind of creative tension is a good thing. The other was his reference to 'Time for a Change.' Listening to that piece apart from the fact that he obviously wrote some of those reflective quiet sections on Awaken was how much of that surreal vibe remained even after he left. He was very gracious about Rick. However the thing that really comes across is how similar to Vangelis he is. Animated full of wild ideas and quite a handful. He was always described like that by Dan Hedges but I can see how he really wasn't just a sideman much more Keith Emerson than Tony Kaye.

So although they asked Keith and worked with Vangelis in the summer of 74 Patrick was not so different. In order to get the gig he was much more politically adroit. One of those famous quotes was. "Are you vegetarian?" and his response was. "If necessary."

If only Bill had not left but as big a one is if only Patrick had stayed.

The band have kicked started so many journeys for me and in this case it was Switzerland. The band really did get the colours, light and vibe of the Mountains at the East end of Lake Geneva in the music and when you walk along the Lake Front with its celebration of art and its gentle unobtrusive sophisticated vibe you can see how Turn of the Century turned out as it did and Wonderous Stories could not have been written anywhere else. Quite different to ELP who could have recorded the sections of Works recorded in Switzerland, anywhere rather than in Montreux.

I know the first incident was him. Not sure about the others but they also took place in Florida - https://www.spokeo.com/Patrick-Moraz

Diplomatically said he believes it was all Jon.

He seemed to relish workin' on those solo albums.
                      Mostly talks about Beginnings

Like I said. Seems he was closest to Steve and Alan.

He's a funny, charmin' guy. Kooky. Quirky. Maverick.
