  • Yes' First 2 Albums vs Yes' Latest 2 Albums

Disregarding what came after the first 2 albums and what came before the latest 2 albums, which do you prefer? They have little in common. There is no overlap of band members. One is from a young band and the other from a mature band. Both albums of each group are somewhat similar stylistically.

Easily their first two, but I’ve been a fan of them long before The Quest.

Not a huge fan of the first two albums but they do contain the budding seeds of what they were about to become. What they have become since Heaven and Earth is really kinda sad.

I like all four albums. This is actually quite hard to answer. I don't think I can compare fairly, since I know the first two albums so much better. I guess I'd choose the first two, but I eally don't know whether my choice would be different if I was equally familiar with the last two. I think I need a bit more time. For now: 1 & 2.

The first two albums have so much energy, Anderson and Squire singing and catchier tunes too so the choice is easy for me.

I think the fact we have lived with the first two for so long now means the question is slightly unfair, but I think Mirror to the Sky is a stonker, so voted for the new ones.

Easily the last two albums. The first two are missing something for me, and I could never figure out what.

Like them all, but i easily picked the first two. I consider those to be classics along with the other 70's and 80's ones. Essential.

The irony is that most of the first album was either covers or left over Mabel Greer tracks.
But the NJNY crowd call the current YES a cover band.

Anyway I was thinking recently that MTTS is the 3rd album of the new YES - Davison Era. And I consider it the breakthrough album of this lineup.

                    H&E = YES
The Quest = Time and a Word
Mirror to the Sky = The YES album.

I'm not saying MTTS is better than TYA
But they are both very guitar driven.
Maybe the next album will be the new Fragile

The Davisonian Era. We're livin' in it.

Yes, TYA and MTTS are both guitar driven. But comparing H&E - MTTS and Yes - TYA , I would say we're talking about whole different levels, where the former is like going through the first three classes at primary school and the latter is like going through the first three classes at University.

My vote went to the first two albums. I do like some songs on both The Quest and Mirror to the Sky, but as whole bodies of work the first two albums really stand above the last two, and are far more consistent in quality.

Whether it's fair to do this comparison for the reasons stated by others is debatable but it's also an interesting question so I couldn't stop myself from voting. And went for the last two. The more I listen to this line up the more I like them. MTTS sounds like a band really finding its feet again.

The last two albums may not be great, but I find most of Yes and Time and a Word unlistenable.
