I’m going to focus on the musical result aspect of your comment, Arno. It’s interesting how blown away people are by advancements in technology. Steve gives voice to his own amazement in this video. However, all the technology in the world can’t be a substitute for good songwriting and great music. When we look at what the Beatles did with 2 track recording and what Yes did with 16 tracks on Close to the Edge, well, the result and impact speaks for itself. It doesn’t have to be an either/or but I’ll take great/epic songwriting any day of the week (in terms of what is of primary importance).

And great songwriting can sound like manure with poor use of technology. Songwriting, technology, performance, all has to come together so it's kind of irrelevant to draw focus away from the technology for songwriting when the song writing has its own proper focus elsewhere...

I guess you didn’t get what I was saying. I’ve got tunes that I’ve recorded on a Tascam 4 track that blow away stuff that I’ve recorded in a professional studio. I said it wasn’t an either/or but the music, for me, is primary.

It’s relevant to you. We’re having an apples and oranges back and forth here. I’m all for technology that brings out the best in the music that is being created but if the music sucks, the technology won’t make up for it.
