New interview with Steve Howe - he talks MTTS, ABWH, Asia and Tomorrow

The most in depth interview I’ve heard so far on Mirror to the Sky. Steve also addresses touring in 2023 and beyond.

For our 115th Episode we had the pleasure of chatting with legendary Yes guitarist, Steve Howe. We discuss the new Yes album, Mirror To The Sky, in depth. ...

seems like a good interview, from what I have watched so far.

I'm sitting in a veterinarian's office and can't listen right now. Anything about a potential new Asia studio album, or was it just retrospective/touring type questions on that front?

I realize he isn't technically in Asia anymore, but it's listed as an interview topic.

I would guess that Carl Palmer's recent surgery might further sort of seal the end of the band as a creative entity. Hope springs eternal, though.

I thought they were still in good form on Gravitas (With Coulston in place of Howe, but otherwise the original lineup), but that was more than a decade ago now.

At least we still have Yes!

"A lot of the heavier conversations I was having with Chris toward the end were about his desire for this thing to go forward. He kept reiterating that to me. [...] He kept telling me, 'No matter what happens, Yes needs to continue moving forward and make great music. So promise me that that's something you want to do.'. And I have to keep making music. It's just what I do. [...] I'm a fan of the band and I want to see it thrive and that means new music." -Billy Sherwood

It’s quite an extensive interview. They’re doing a track by track break down of MTTS, Sean does a good job here. Steve appears to be throughly enjoying the questions. Haven’t gotten to the Asia part yet.

          The Progatron 5000!!!

          Gonna watch now. Thanks

          • another statement necklace from Steve. There will be no speculation to it's significance. Looks nice.

          • Sean Tonar looks like a yesfan. Greyin' facial hair. Glasses. Quirky hat he wears indoors. Amirite Homemade Parachute ?

          • propulsive bass. More upbeat.

          • CftS different guitar sound from rest. Double wah-wah. Analogue pedal board. Steve had open book as J and B wrote it.

          • AC grandiose levels. Rock textures. B wrote some of the guitar parts. Joyful song.

          • L had version A then version b. Plays autoharp. Collab with S J B . Expanded the idea of luminous.
orchestral endin'. Pedal steel. Steve was gonna open a guitar store. Bought a fender steel.

          • LotD dominant 7th bluesy endin' after Rollin' Stones start. Steve's words. "There's no time for a happy endin'". How catastrophic you can make your life theme. Find a stable zen position. He says. Plays his 175. At home with it.

•MttS. Opens with fender telecaster. Classical guitar. 12 string acoustics. "Dreams of a sky without fire" was from a whole song originally.
          He sings the line hahahahaa.
Juano wrote the rest. Complex arrangement.
MttS ends with band rockin'out. No. Orchestra doesn't end it. The band says. No. We back, baby!!!
Then the orchestra say. No. We back. For last 8 bars....woah 🤯

          • CoT J wrote it. Had to be on album. Mellow track. Acoustic. They tried church organ. But went back minimal. B sings a line once. 175 acoustic and amped sound. At same time. Like FM on TQ. Pedal steel used. Addin' lovely texture. A demandin' instrument. He says.

          • UP worked on the same as main tracks. Big song. 2 part end. Tons of organ and guitar soloin'. Rocky but then moves to churchy organ. Mystifyin'. Yesfans want surprisin' arrangements!!! He says.
Les Paul jnr. Stratocaster. Tecaster. Joy in variety!!!

          • OSiE sprightly song. Personality. Happiness comes and goes.

          • MP was gonna be "A good day to be had by all" .
but. Too close to IWBAGD from the Ladder.
Bass line from MP brought up. (Henry loves it.) Must be good. Love Steve's bass riffs. A bit disco.
70's jazzy. Steely Dannish. Bass changed to 1/2 time. B only plays the Root bass 3 times on album. He always tries different things.

Steve confirms that Yes will be touring the US this year. It also sounds like a tour of Western Europe and the UK is on tap for next year.

Steve offers a heartfelt tribute to Alan and recounts some really cool memories of the Drama sessions. Random factoid, he and Alan once owned a health food store together.

A lovely interview; I've rarely seen Howe so talkative. Great work by Sean. Lots of interesting detail on the new album, but a definite no on playing Relayer live.

It’s nice to hear an interview that isn’t rushed and in which softball questions aren’t lobbed at our musical heroes. Sean is clearly a fan but he asks Steve questions like a peer and as someone who isn’t gushing over a musical icon. Major props to him.

No, there's no discussion of Asia in the present. The titling of the interview is just saying Howe was in Asia, the band is barely mentioned and then only in the past tense.

I do love it: that's why I got Sean to ask about it! 😁
