  • "As clearer companions....." melody

After looking at the "Wurm" - "Does it Really Happen" similarity, I thought I would try another thread.

Ritual (Tales from Topographic Oceans) borrows at least a couple of phrases from Yes material stated on the same album or Close to the Edge.
On a subsequent Yes album there is a melodic phrase that is very similar to "As clearer companions shall call to be near" (from Ritual). Has this similarity jumped out at anyone else?

No, but “as clearer companions”might work over the three chords of “Würm…”

Hint: Listen for it on Relayer.

I find Into the Lens has similarities to Ritual.

I find Into The Lens has many more similarities to I Am A Camera by The Buggles. 😉

A very astute observation. Only a true fan could catch such subtilties. 🤔

I'm actually developing some ear-training/composition workshops that might include some Yes music for my students.

I'm also looking at comparing the similar song structures of
                  Roundabout - Sound Chaser and
Yours is No Disgrace - Machine Messiah

I'm sort of testing the waters here first

Yes definitely! I remember discussing this on the old site.
                    Gotta listen again for comparison.
But the cadence and dichotomy of contrasting intensities are there . Subtle, but striking, even as this is a quality on most Yes epics. Steve’s guitar melody lines are uncannily interchangeable at certain moments.

Is it the exact intervals you’re listening for, or a string of lyrics sung on the same note followed by a descent?
                      Do these fit your criteria?

“Master of images, songs cast a light on you”

These are close, pitch goes up & down at the end of the phrases.
”Workings of man set to ply out historical life”
”Don’t forget to leave good footprints behind”

The 2 phrases I am comparing from "Ritual" and "Gates of Delerium"
(As Clearer Companions, Shall Call to Be Near ------------Choose and Renounce, Throwing Chains to the Floor)
have similar melodies and yes, the intervals are the same. In addition, it is how they fit in harmonically with the song. Both phrases start on the 5th of the chord.
