Sometimes the lights all shining on me, other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me what a long strange trip it’s been. -
And yet. Book after podcast after headline uses those 2 words to explain the revolvin' door of talents.
I won't repeat the organic legitamacy of the current YES Official. It's a joy to me to still dig new YES music and of course a renaissance of Roger Dean. Plus excited to hear new album.
HIGHER CENTURY
( just latest guess )
Now. Gotta admit when Steve goes. Won't bunch my undies if Arc of Life take the Yankees and Geoff leans more into DBA or even ASIA. We've had a great run.👍 2Comment

VERY happy to see a couple things here, as a YES fan...
1- YES took a lot of time to properly mourn the passing of Alan White publicly.
2- Jay Schellen HAS ultimately been named the 3rd official drummer of YES.
My first Jay Schellen CD was with GPS: I thought he was phenomenal...
My first Jay Schellen CONCERT was the night of my 20th anniversary vacation to San Francisco with my wife: the Yes TOPOGRAPHIC DRAMA tour, Mountain Winery, Saratoga, CA. That setlist was a "killer"... and Jay and Billy together that night, were genuinely the best I had seen & heard the Yes rhythm section locked in since the 2000 MASTERWORKS tour. Jay is great.
CONGRATULATIONS, Jay Schellen... welcome to the future of YES liner notes, tour programs, and the recorded legacy.

I don't know that you have an actual insight into Howe's thinking. It seems to me that Howe is excited about creating new Yes music (with a second album coming very soon after The Quest). He isn't resting on his laurels. He is trying to evolve a new Yes sound. You might not like it, but that doesn't mean Howe's merely doing "what's most comfortable for him". What would be most comfortable for him is not making a new album at all.👍 5Comment

Schellen has always seemed like he should be in Whitesnake to me.

That's probably just because of his image/tattoos etc. True, he may look like a hard rock kinda guy, but you know what they say about books and covers and all. He definitely has the Alan White style and approach. I'm glad he's in Yes officially. It makes the sadness of Alan's absence slightly not as bad when you still have the Alan White musical soul and sound carried over to the next drummer.👍 2Comment

So is the official part about becoming a shareholder or something, or a contractual/legal thing? Because I'd assumed he'd been a member of the band for some time, having toured and recorded and appeared on album covers, etc? I've little idea of how this side of things works, as you can tell.Sometimes the lights all shining on me, other times I can barely see.

Previously, Jay would have been a "sideman" or session musician like Tom Brislin or Lee Pomeroy with ARW. He would have been paid fees, like any other freelancer, for his work on tours and albums.👍 1Comment

IIRC permanent band members become partners or shareholders in the Yes "Official" company. That company will have contracts (as associated obligations) with Yes management, professional advisers, record companies, tour promoters etc.

I would guess that becoming a member is a presentational thing these days.👍 1Comment

As far as I know, and this is all very murky and difficult to tell, Sherwood and Davison are still employees rather than partners/shareholders. So I don't think Schellen will have become a shareholder now. He may have moved from being paid per show to being paid a retainer?

It's possible that he has the ability to play a wide range of styles, i.e. what his customers eant or specify in their contracts.Comment

Hurricane started out in 1983-84 with the original lineup of lead vocalist Kelly Hansen (vocals/rhythm guitar), Robert Sarzo (guitar), Tony Cavazo (bass), and Jay Schellen (drums). Robert Sarzo is the brother of Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake) and Tony Cavazo is the brother of Carlos Cavazo (Quiet Riot, Ratt).
