  • Compilations by Era/Lineup

Usually a Yes compilation (Yesstory, Classic Yes, Yes 35 Ultimate Collection etc) pretty much focuses on their entire studio albums, usually with an emphasis on 1970-87 material - but never on one lineup or era. Yesterdays was almost the exception if it wasn't for 'America', the odd track in a collection of early Peter Banks era material. Swap that track for Something's Coming and then we're closer to the idea.

Box sets don't count, as they often do break discs up into eras. But a standalone compilation album for one lineup hasn't been done before to my knowledge. So, what compilation based on era/lineup would you put together. Use any lineup or any era(as you define it) to create a compilation. They don't have to be chronological. For Example, I'll do:

    The Rabin Years 1983-94"

    1) Cinema
    2) Big Generator
    3) It Can Happen
    4) Lift Me Up
    5) Changes
    6) Final Eyes
    7) The Calling
    8) Our Song
    9) Shoot High Aim Low
    10) Miracle Of Life
    11) Endless Dream
    12) Owner Of A Lonely heart

    or maybe I'll do:

    ANDERSON/SQUIRE/HOWE/WAKEMAN/WHITE Years 1973- 2004:
    disc 1
    1) Parallels
    2) Golden Age
    3) Future Times/Rejoice
    4) Richard
    5) That That Is
    6) Wondrous Stories
    7) On The Silent Wings Of Freedom
    disc 2
    8) Montreux Theme
    9) The Revealing Science Of God
    10) Onward
    11) Don't Kill The Whale
    12) Show Me
    13) Footprints
    14) Awaken

What's your compilation based on lineup or era?

Interesting idea. A compilation of 90s era Yes would be interesting. A confusing era I know given all the line up changes, but a compilation of the best tracks from all the albums that came out during that period would be very varied. No idea how many discs this would need, (I’m guessing 2) but I’d go for:

    Lift Me Up
    Universal Garden
    Mind Drive
It Will Be A Good Day
    The Calling (Extended Version)
Take The Water To The Mountain
    Open Your Eyes
    Sign Language
Mood For A Day (from Symphonic Music of Yes)
    I Would Have Waited Forever
    Homeworld (The Ladder)
    Be The One
    Endless Dream

I think that's a compilation from one decade that includes the contributions of 10 members of the band. Not bad!

Yesterdays when it came out in early 1975 was revelatory for me. Prior to that I'd not heard any of their first two albums, nor America. I still listen to it quite a bit. It takes me back to when I first bought it and heard it.
With hindsight, is it not a little surprising that there was no other compilation until Classic Yes came out in early 1981? And then not another till the 2CD YesStory over a decade later...
Sometimes the lights all shining on me, other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me what a long strange trip it’s been.
