I would say somewhere between nothing and demos: I suspect they did *some* writing, maybe some planning, maybe some sketching out of where something might be, and just maybe a whole lot of jazz hands (prog hands?). Maybe like a novelist sketching out the structure of a novel, with a beginning middle and end, characters, themes, plots, story hooks and beats, all before the actual work of putting one readable word in front of another. It's not nothing, but it's not something presentable, really, either, somewhere between plan and a literal sketch: it's the necessary prep work that in this case didn't get any further. Did they pass sound files or written musical notation back and forth, or lyrical ideas? I doubt it. Probably nowhere near even one of Marillion's "Making Of" disks of bits and pieces and ideas jammed together before they're even really songs, never mind nowhere near Marillion's lost demos from 1988…

We know what they did - they polished one of Rabin’s old tracks and that not to the degree it was publishable. I did like that, but clearly the will to collaborate on new material was not there - not between them at least.

I would gather they mainly toured but other than that, did mostly nothing. I mean, they might have wanted to kinda do something, but ultimately kinda lackadaisically didn't do anything. They may have done a couple demos, but nothing along the lines of completed songs or a lost album or whathaveyou. The Fragile Touch song (which I like) was possibly from Rabin's current solo demos that the others pitched in and added to just to see what would work. So they probably didn't really have too much of a plan or even the will or desire to cook up a new album in the format of an alternate Yes ala ABWH. The plan was probably always just to tour, just for the dough and for fun & giggles. Nothing wrong with that at all, but fans were kinda strung along for a bit. ARW may have been of the mindset of 'if it happens, it happens', but then it didn't happen, for whatever reason.

I wouldn't say they had NO plan to record anything, just that it was low on the priority list. Kind of like when you're cleaning out the garage, you have a project, clean out the garage -but then you start looking at the stuff you're putting away, and talking on the smartphone, and going to get another beer etc, and basically just piddling around, I can't say, but perhaps ARW piddled around a bit in between tours, and didn't put in the extra push it may have required to spearhead a new chapter.

I'm surprised how many Yes fans posting about this have no idea what Rabin is like professionally. When he says 1/5 of an album is done, he is serious. He is the opposite of Anderson who said in 2018 or 2019 that he has eight Yes songs ready to go as soon as Howe hires him.
