  • Is Luminosity “Light of the Ages, Part 2”?

I remember Jon Davison mentioning that he presented a second part of Light of the Ages to the band for Heaven and Earth, but the band didn’t want to record it.

Steve says that Luminosity dates back to Heaven and Earth, and that at the time the band didn’t want to record it. (Steve says he likes it, so I’m guessing Chris or Geoff weren’t keen on it?)

Luminosity has the “light” theme, which makes it similar to LOTA. I find the music somewhat similar too.

So, do you think Luminosity started out as Light of the Ages, Part 2?

could well be, Light of the Ages was one of the highlights of H & E. I think they've done great with Luminosity, its a grower for sure.

I’m gonna take a listen to both and check back (most all sound similar across last 3 records to me anyway, but that is an interesting obs!!).

I was just now going to start a new thread as to if anyone thinks CFTS is an Ice Bridge Pt 2, musically. I get the same feel from both.

Don’t want to detract from your thread, but was too lazy to make another one. 😆.

maybe folks can talk about both.

Yes, that’s also an interesting comparison regarding TIB and CFTS. In both cases, the opening song is also the most “high energy” song and they have the closing section that features Steve and Geoff’s dueling solos. You’ve also got more sparse guitar throughout, a strong bass line (although more prominent on CFTS) and references to the sky.

To me, CFTS is sorta Dare To Know II - maybe it's the orchestra, I'm not sure. But the vibe is more Dare To Know than Ice Bridge. To me at least.

Speaking of Luminosity, the last couple minutes or so reminds me of the ending of Ritual. Does anyone else think that?

I like Light of the Ages. Luminosity might be Light of the Ages part two, but let's just say that I understand why the band didn't want to record it and would have preferred it had stayed that way.

Luminosity is in the running to be my favorite song on the album, although I think MttS gets the nod.

Luminosity has grown on me as well. All Connected is still my favorite, but Cut from the Stars and Luminosity are not far behind. The title track isn’t in the top three for me at this point, but I have only listened to it three or four times.

The core of luminosity is pretty simple. I hear that Arno is saying about it sounding like a church hymn. But there’s enough going on to hold my interest and the the last two minutes with orchestra and steel are sublime.

To me it is good, but not on the same level as Light of the Ages.

I feel "Luminosity" is a much better song than "Light of the Ages" (Though this may be, in part, a holo effect from the two top notch songs "Luminosity" comes after, a reverse-halo effect for LotA, and that nice outro "Luminosity" leaves us at the end of every play).

However, that doesn't really speak to the original question, which was whether or not some of what became "Luminosity" began as a second part to "Light of the Ages" that never got published and then was later revisited and transformed into a separate song on a separate album with its own identity. That's possible. If someone asks Davison and he says yes, the OP is going to deserve a nomination for catch of the year for figuring it out. If not, well, it's not the worst thread in the world.
"A lot of the heavier conversations I was having with Chris toward the end were about his desire for this thing to go forward. He kept reiterating that to me. [...] He kept telling me, 'No matter what happens, Yes needs to continue moving forward and make great music. So promise me that that's something you want to do.'. And I have to keep making music. It's just what I do. [...] I'm a fan of the band and I want to see it thrive and that means new music." -Billy Sherwood
