Sonic Perspectives : Geoff Downes MttS

    Great new interview. 25 minutes.

    • Horizons is still a goin' concern. 14 mins long.

    • believes Juano's vocal lines and delivery needs just support only from keyboards. Doesn't want too much info comin' at the listener.

    • rates Machine Messiah as most important YES song he's been involved in. A transitional song.

I mean, really? Too much info coming at the listener? Did he forget he’s in Yes, not the Ramones?

I agree with his take on Machine Messiah. I wish Yes would write music more in that vein in 2023.

I dunno, with Sherwood's compositions, I get it... but with The Quest I personally wanted more information flying at my face. I liked Geoff more on Heaven and Earth.

Look how he grins when Scott points out his Widor Toccata quote!

Geoff's wall has got more framed diplomas than my blinkin' dentist. Dr Jakob. 😯

Wonder if the one with the heraldic borders is his Music Degree from Leeds College of Music?

          DBA in September, possibly. :-)

Say what some folks will say, but Geoff loves the entire process of making music, and certainly understands it better than most. He lives it, but he really goes the extra mile for sounds and authenticity.

He takes and has taken the time for all these interviews over the years and I know he goes out of his way for those fans who respects all he does, and those to whom love his music and songs just as much as he does, and what goes on within them.

Yeah, YES is still a big deal to me, but ASIA is and has been the entire time, too. Icon was in another realm, and the foundation for many ASIA songs as well. DBA is something modern and different, and I love it, and always look forward to the next album. Geoff has always done a variety of things/projects, which to me, is what music is all about. Different, engaging, surprising, out front, supportive, but always those sounds and layering, no matter the style of songs and other performers.

Love Geoff Downes' keyboard work in any format, but I do miss him in the context of Asia/Icon/New Dance Orchestra. That to me is the true identifiable sound of Geoff Downes - futuristic, cinematic, modern, symphonic, techno - though I still love him in Yes.

I agree with him on Machine Messiah as well! I too want more music in that vein. I kind of wish he would get beyond the this is how YES should sound mindset. We are not in the 70s anymore. I want a sound that respects the YES heritage, but that speaks to what is now. I want the kind of cutting edge soundscapes like he had on Drama. That album is iconic and Downes keyboard creativity was a big part of that.

He said 12 minutes or so for Horizons even though I first heard that it was clocking in at 18.

I remember there was some speculation back in 2014 that part of Horizons was used for Subway Walls.

I’m wondering why this music hasn’t seen the light of day. It would seem to indicate that it isn’t any good…

                    It's the B-side to Time.
                    Not on Yes' payroll.

Maybe AI could be used to finish it off?

Which begs the question. What Yessong and vocalist will get the AI treatment?

Awaken as sung by Freddie Mercurie?

The Ice Bridge sung by Robert Plant?

To The Moment sung by Liam Gallagher?

All Connected sung by Kate Bush?
