My First Review - Mirror To The Sky

Hello guys, this is my review of the album after receiving a complimentary download from Sony.

Cut From The Stars - I like it a lot, most have heard it by now. It’s a strong, intricate track that taught us all that the “dark sky park” is a real thing

All Connected - My favorite, love Billy’s bass and the overall arrangement.

Luminosity - What comes out as unique here is the melody delivered by Jon Davison with the warmest timbre we ever heard him thus far. Billy’s backing vocals are beautiful, this will probably remain a classic similar to Magnification. Steve’s playing is very sweet and warm reminiscent of yes acoustic tracks from 2004. Ending with a very nice slide guitar that takes you into space, it does not seem boring for some reason. Drums return with strength a la Keys To Ascension”. In a way reminds me of Starcastle and the orchestra complements Steve wonderfully.

Living Out Their Dream - A true rocker, sounds more like Asia and it sounds like someone else is singing because Jon D uses a lower timber blended with Steve’s voice, similar to Squakett, I wish more things would be happening, but the song closes slowly with a nice ending by Steve.

Mirror To The Sky - Starting with a nice acoustic piano intro, the piece goes into a rockier Mind Drive like part, sounding fresh because Steve is going for a crazy solo. Not much happens lyrically, but musically it’s great. Reminiscent of Trevor Horn’s ‘I Am A Camera’ we hear “You’re my mirror to the sky” then move into a section that seemed connected to the song “A Living Island” from The Quest. Next, the tempo is increasing along with Davison chanting, Geoff’s piano is finally heard properly, then we’re back to a quiet part reminding me of the band Mystery “Dance with Butterflies”. The orchestra overall is beautiful, should translate nice live, in a way the fast part is a bit like Yours Is No Disgrace backwards or mirrored?.

Circles Of Time - Very nice simple ballad, Jon’s voice is very beautiful reminding me of ‘Holy Lamb’ with very gentle and carefully drafted acoustic guitar by Steve and Jon D. Best thing since “Soft as a Dove’ from Magnification or ABWH.

Unknown Place - Happy melody by Jon Davison with acoustic and electric backing by Howe. More of a jam reminding me of 'The Quest’ that ends with a part reminding me of moments of Awaken. Drums remind me of ‘Keys To Ascension’ again and it’s way better for me than ‘Music To My Ears’

One Second Is Enough - Very nice fresh sounding Beatlesque simple song

Magic Potion - A Steve Howe song ending with sweet sounds and Steve jumping around. Melody is nice and Geoff is back with a sweet ending, his playing is inspiring reminding me of “It Was All We Knew” but in a good way, more dynamic and exciting.

Overall, Steve’s guitar sounds are fresh and innovative, well done! Billy is amazing honoring Chris’s memory! I love Jay Schellen’s drumming and he really shines on every track. Geoff’s keys are less present overall, but do play an important part of the sound in key moments. I think Chris and Alan would’ve been proud of Mirror To The Sky. I thought one single could’ve been an edited version of Luminosity. This album seems to be a step up from The Quest, but I think there is definitely room to grow. Just like The Ice Bridge was the rockies song on the previous album, I feel that the first two songs are the best tracks and then it’s all downwards from there. It’s almost as if Cut To The Stars and All Connected are coming from a complex future, while the other tracks take you back to a simpler past. I hope the next album will break even newer ground. Yes does seem to have found a new identity musically with the new members and they should have some productive years ahead. I am happy to still be a yes fan in 2023.

Thanks for your review. You seem to be one of the only ones reviewing this album who doesn't single out the title track as the best track.

I think Luminosity is the best track, it's the most innovative

Great review John. My favorite track must've changed half a dozen times over the course of a few months. "Luminosity" was definitely a favorite for a while. Still love it. The entire album is really solid, including the "bonus" disc.

"Living Out Their Dream" certainly is an odd one -- it sounds like Yes doing the Stones, a bit, and is snarky and funny, and not the least bit cosmic. After not knowing what to make of it, it quickly grew on me to the point of really enjoying it.

But I hope other fans' reactions to the more ambitious, more epic style music, mirrors my own, and reaches the band. They do seem to have found a path for themselves. I'd love for them to keep building and traveling further into epic territory. They've managed to put a fresh spin on it.

So has this one grown on you since your initial post, surpassing All Connected? I am looking forward to this one.

Yes it has, my "downwards from there" comment wasn't meant to scare you just I couldn't help but think that the fist two songs were somewhat tighter, then we go into these pieces with looser parts, which is normal I guess, it was just my initial reaction

Overall I think you'll love Luminosity and Mirror for sure

Thank you, I am definitely impressed overall that they pushed themselves forward as a unit, it's an amazing process to reinvent a new Yes sound and they are making it happen

Hopefully, we'll get to hear at least a few of these songs live. Personally, I'd love to hear a big chunk of the album live, like in the old days. Much of this would translate well in concert.

Excellent review for sure! Very well balanced. Glad you gave the album a fair shake. I want this album right now! This is my pre birthday gift to myself.

Yea, me too, that would be a real treat!

You lucky son of a gun! But I guess if someone’s “worthy” of a preview, you qualify. (Still jealous as hell…)
I’m in a positive mood today, so with All Connected sounding a bit too forced complex to me, I’ll take simpler songs as a good thing. I’m happy to learn that one of the items on my wish list
-a piano intro- can now be ticked off!

Glad to see you did get an advance copy. Richly deserved for rejuvenatin' the site. Prompt service to feedback as well.

What you say about L is intruigin'. Does the music "glow"?

The LotD singin' sounds like the return of the Dowe Index: Davison and Howe close octave singin'.

MttS. Does the bluesy, heavy guitar sound Zeppish?

What are the themes in CoT? Romance? Grief? Regret? Acceptance?

Are there any references to Taylor Hawkins?

AC and CftS are wonderful and futuristic.

Listen to new Gabriel, Jethro Tull or Foo Fighters. They all sound good and current. But compared to AC and CftS? These 2 sound a century ahead.

Advanced copy? I'm jealous. Looks like I won't be getting the CD on the 19th now, or so Amazon tells me. Not happy if that's true.

                              Thanks

L - Yes, you can say the music glows in the sense that it sounds fresh and organic and Jon's voice is super cool

LotD - It's nothing I've ever heard before, Steve's voice has an effect I think, making it sound like someone else
Jon D is singing the lowest I've ever heard, its very out of place and now I wonder it was necessary

                              Mtts - Yes, it's awesome

CoT - It's being away from the loved ones on time cycles

No ref to Taylor Hawkins, as far as I could tell

                              Hope that helps!
