  • Sound Chaser, the midway electric guitar solo

Well, it’s just amazing! I mean we have tons of great Steve acoustic solos, but this... it’s electrifying. He should have tried something like it again at some point in Yes history. I remember when I first heard We Agree from Magnification, there’s that bit near the end, when the band stops and Steve’s electric guitar goes on.
I almost had a heart attack. I thought: yes, this is going to be that moment when he goes off to ethereal heights again. Alas, the whole thing’s over in just a few seconds...

Through the 90’s & 00’s I hoped Steve would use his Yes concert solo spot do an acoustic version of the Soundchaser solo / cadenza, like he did with To Be Over.

The end of 1974 saw a number of classic releases by major progressive rock bands. It was the sunset of the golden age for a genre that produced an amazing output of creative music during the previous five years. As if realizing the looming end, three of the guiding lights of Prog released great records within a few weeks of […]
Sometimes the lights all shining on me, other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me what a long strange trip it’s been.

Thanks, that was a good read. Interesting that Alan and Patrick wrote the ending of the battle section of Gates, must be like the two or three minutes before the collapse into the ambient part.
          (Hope that makes sense...)

Cadenza is the perfect word for that - it's very cadenza like in structure. In spite of that I think it does need to be played on electric guitar - it has a sort of metallic attack to it that would be diminished were it transcribed to a standard Spanish guitar.

Great link, Ash - very interesting read.
