Could Return Trip have been better?

Am I the only one who thinks that had they just finished up the townhouse sessions we would of gotten a better album

    Track list I wanted
    1. Fly From Here Suite
    2. Telephone Secrets
    3. Crossfire
    4. Satellite
    5. Vermillion Sands
    6. Go through This

That’s not Return Trip. It’s something different all together.
    But could have been interesting.
There were some nice melodies there, even if most of them would need a lot of reworking.
Not sure about Vermillion Sands as there is already a (very nice) Buggles version of that.

You’re ditching all the best tracks on the album. But there again that’s no great surprise.

no we have the benoit versions of those tracks. Do you really feel the Horn Version the man you always wanted me to be Hour of need etc are needed?

No but then I don’t think we desperately needed the Horn version of the Horn tracks. It’s a bit of a waste hearing David sticking to Horn’s guide vocal, but although it’s more authentic I never cared for the eccentricities of Horn’s enunciation. There are some refinements, but overall I’d stick with version 1.

Just drop “Don’t Take No For An Answer” and swap in “Go Through This”.

I don't understand adding a song with Howe on lead vocals, unless the whole project wasn't going to happen unless Horn sucked up to Howe by letting him sing a song.

Remove Don't Take No and Into The Storm, insert Go Through This instead and you have it.

I am surprised so many people are fine with the weird mixing on the return trip The man you always wanted me to be…

on the original the focus is on Chris singing the man you always wanted me to be not the eeyeahs in the background

on the return trip it’s reversed with horn’s eeyeahs placed prominently which to me is not only the wrong choice but almost unforgivable it’s why I haven’t beat the horn producer drum really since 2018

I just don’t get why we need Horn covering Benoit’s lines it would be like of Horn did From a Page return trip especially as there were a ton of material they could of used to finish up Return trip as in theory

                  you have 4 townhouse songs
                  1 xyz song
                  run with the fox
and all of adventures in modern recording to pull from to make a drama 2

He just wouldn’t take “no” for an answer.

Don’t Take No was already partially recorded, so I think that’s why they recorded it. They already had most of it done. They would have needed to get Atlantic’s permission to use any old recordings of Go Through This for this album, which meant no Chris Squire on the track.

In hindsight I don't think Return Trip was needed at all. Though interesting I think the original version is the better one in the end.

it could of been better if we actually got what likely would of been the album from an alternate 1981

I've voiced both my support for Trevor Horn making Return Trip and my overall lack of interest — I bought it, glad I did, but don't listen to it or consider it an improvement over the original (mostly the contrary, in fact).

But, what's interesting/distressing to me, is that at least up here in the Hinterland, it is *the* version available on streaming and digital purchase. Also notably missing: Heaven and Earth (gone from Apple Music/Spotify), Talk, Union, the Like It Is pair… I'm sure everyone who ever was going to listen to it already has it, and I'm guessing the band is picking up new fans by the three-fingered alien handful, so maybe not a big issue, but I tell you, the so-called digital revolution is occasionally a lot like growing up around import record stores in Winnipeg, Manitoba, except without the good parts.

Except then it would have been a different album and not a 'return trip '.
