  • my new (2023) interview thread

So...it's going to be a while before the actual interview appears on the blog but we had an interesting conversation and so here are a few tidbits about the album because that was the focus of the conversation.

We talked about what it means to name an album after a member of your family. He said Rio already "sings constantly.."

He confirmed to me that "Thandi" is about poaching/hunting in South Africa and is named for this:
Every rhino counts. Never before has this phrase been more relevant than to that of the story of thandi, the first ever rhino to survive a poaching incident.

I noted the sounds at the beginning in my preliminary review and what I thought they were, turns out they're all rhino sounds.
Lou plays drums, I thought it was Ryan.

"Egoli" is about his experience of the South African diaspora, and he talked about his continual frustration with the ongoing kleptocracy. He was very kind in saying that I had wonderfully expressed my interpretation.

"Paradise" is about the decline of the UK and I'm very proud of myself for figuring it out based on two phrases in the lyrics. I made a comment that the riff reminds me of something Mutt Lange would have written for Shania back in the day and he said someone else said that to him as well.

We had a discussion of youthful hijinks re: "Big Mistakes" and Trevor said that he built the song around one of the guitar parts.

I got that "Paradise" is about the UK, but I am curious in what specific way he feels the country has declined.

Overall, it is a very political album.

Yes, I would say overall there is more obvious political/social commentary on this album. In the past he would disguise it in some way.

My goodness that was an interesting read.

To me art is all about forming a relationship. A reaching out to understand and tune into the artist. Over and over again in that interview you showed the most delicious insight into the music so much so you got EXACTLY what Trevor is trying to do.

I was really interested in your exchanges on South Africa and the UK. I have spent sometime in SA in 2018 and 2019 and wanted to really understand what was going on. The point about the country post Mandela is entirely accurate. The infrastructure is falling apart and whilst it is not the asset stripping of Wall Street it's whats happening, the country's assets are falling apart and yet here is the thing as fast as they gentrify parts of the Townships around the edges the shanties grow fuelled by migration from less wealthy countries in the North and guess what, as in practically every country I have visited, the Black South Africans actually resent those incomers because they will do the work for less money. In general though the rampant corruption will not be dealt with until the black population are confident enough to vote for someone other than the ANC and they have always voted for them fearing a return to apartheid if they vote for anyone else.

Trevors remarks about the UK Proms was particularly insightful. The intellectual and artistic capital of England is very much intact, Radio 3's Proms being a wonderful example. But the mood of the country is dire. I have not lived in the UK for any length of time since 2017 and each time I return that dichotomy, heritage verses day to day gets wider and wider. People are not happy and the restrictions of 2020 and 2021 have accelerated what was already happening with fragmented segments of the population glaring at each other.

As a "Yesfan" I was brought up on Anderson's signpost lyrics. As I get older I have noticed Horn's humanist lyrics have resonated with me much more and as with his purely musical sensibilities Trevors lyrics look likely to be dead centre off what interests me.

There are very few projects I physically buy but I now actually think I will buy Rio as a physical CD at some point.

I look forward to the next segment.

Doug Helvering on the Daily Doug YouTube channel is interviewing Trevor in Thursday.
Sometimes the lights all shining on me, other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me what a long strange trip it’s been.

Ah, thanks for the heads up! The promotional cycle continues!

And THANK YOU all for your kind words and taking the time to read. I appreciate it immensely and also that you all get what I'm trying to do in terms of my interviews with Trevor. Because as someone who consumes them all I want to give him something different to talk about and hopefully something he finds interesting (which, then, everyone else will as well).

Thanks Luna... I just popped onto the 'Trevor' thread on the off chance, as there has been a bit of Trev noise and I think I struck gold with this. Not a bad start for a monday morning, cheers!
