    interview for Classic Rock

Captain Grumpy Rock Wakeman discusses receiving a CBE, Steve Howe, his plans for the English Rock Ensemble, and for Boris Johnson

Sounds like he might be throwing in the towel (somewhat):

Back in 2019, before covid came along, you told Classic Rock of a plan to talk to Jon Anderson and Trevor Rabin about getting into a studio and laying down the new songs written by the three of you. Is that still possible?
For me, an album would need to be done together in the same room. That’s where the magic comes from. But for various reasons – geography, schedules, finance – maybe we’ve hit a brick wall.

If money is the problem, why not a crowdfunding campaign, I would grab as deep in my pockets as I can

And come on, guys, geography can't be really the problem, and if they could tour they can find together for recording as well, if they really want. And schedules? The same... Well, there must be something else...

No it's money. And give a fuck.

If they each of them wanted to do it with the two others, the barriers would magically disappear.

I'm thinking maybe he's just copping to the fact that he's tried to convince Trevor to give it another go and failed. Or acknowledging something which can't be spoken of directly.

You never fail to take a shot at RW and/or JA. Your disdain for Rick knows no bounds. I’d love to
know how he wronged you in the past...

It is interesting as is the phrase 'mutual respect' as opposed to 'friendship'. It may well be just a social get together [now there are no limits to that sort of thing outside Westminster], but that phrase is more suggestive of 'work meeting' rather than 'party time'. Who knows? I'm probably setting my hopes dangerously high...

I'm inclined to take 'having lunch with Steve' as just that. Meeting up at a hostelry or restaurant for some food and a natter. I do the same with a number of former-colleagues when I'm able to.
Sometimes the lights all shining on me, other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurs to me what a long strange trip it’s been.

You may be right - Howe has maintained cordial relations with many of the people he's worked with [in spite of that reputation for crankiness], but I had the impression Wakeman Senior wasn't among that circle of 'old friends'. I might be wrong and I wouldn't be upset to find out I was.

Remember a warm and cordial chat between the 2 on Rick's Planet Rock show. They were reminiscing about Parallels especially.

These guys don't do catch ups. This may well be a business meeting to discuss media/publicity campaign for 50th anniversary CTTE boxset/celebration for 2022. Getting their ducks lined up in a row. To shift boxsets. Dean has already painted new paintings for it.

                              My thoughts exactly.

Or it may be that Howe wants to strike a good deal on some of the ARW merch that Wakeman and Co. are selling here
