  • Jon Anderson and The School of Rock 7/12/2023 review

I had a very enjoyable evening yesterday at the concert with Jon and the Paul Green School of Rock kids.

It was a long evening as well!! Three and a half hours, with a 15 minutes Intermission.

The evening started with a set with from the School of Rock kids by themselves, playing some Rolling Stones and Frank Zappa songs. Now in all honesty, the first three songs where like watching a very average coverband, which had me fearing the rest of the evening, but after those three songs, the kids really hit their stride and played great. Highlights were the Zappa song "Slave" and a song that was introduced by Paul Green. It was from a band from Chile, Fulang, which he gotten to know at the end of the 80s when he was in Chile. It was a protest band, protesting again the Pinochet regime, but because protest lyrics could get you in jail and tortured, their songs were without lyrics. The song played was "Suite Recoleta" and it was very impressive. Very progressive and the singer, who was basically scatting and using her voice as an instrument was very, very good, actually completely blew us away. Later in the evening she got a "solo" during the Würm section of "Starship Trooper " and knocked our socks off again.

Then after a short break, the first set with Jon started with a little bit of Heart of the Sunrise segueing into Yours is No Disgrace. It was the start of wonderful and vibrant set of Yes classics, very well performed by the kids with some twists and turns in the arrangements of the songs. And Jon? Well, what a voice the man still has!! Nothing short of amazing. Still so clear and yet powerful and he didn't miss a note. What occurred to me also is how rhythmically good he still is, his timing impeccable.

Of course it wouldn't be Jon without some goofs. Like introducing two girls on acoustic guitar who were going to play "this wonderful song from Steve Howe" and then having to ask one of the girls the title of the song, because he had forgotten it........turned out to be "Mood For a Day"...😁 or starting Starship Trooper when Let's Dance was to be played first and when someone got his attention saying "Oh, Fuck!" full into the microphone, which the kids on the stage found hilarious.

But what really shone through was how much he loved performing with these young kids, that their energy has a positive effect on him and vice versa how much these kids respect him. And how much his heart is still into performing these Yes songs. The love he has for this music was palatable.

Despite feeling there are some good songs on Mirror To The Sky and respecting Jon Davison for what he does and how he does it, I'm more and more enclined to side with the portion of the fanbase who would rather have Anderson back fronting Yes. And it's not nostalgia that brings me to feel this way, but it is because of how Jon is performing in the here and now; with such passion for the songs he helped create and his voice and himself being in such great shape. It's a treat then to hear the original voice perform these songs.

All in all a great and very worthwhile evening. Impressed with both Jon as well as the School of Rock kids.

    Setlist:

    The School of Rock kids:

    - Miss You (Rolling Stones)
    - Doreen (Frank Zappa)
    - Honky Tonk Women (Rolling Stones)
    - Outside Now( Frank Zappa)
    - Slave (Frank Zappa)
    - You Didn't Try (Frank Zappa)
    - Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones)
    - Suite Recoleta (Fulano)

Jon Anderson and The School of Rock kids:

    - Yours is No Disgrace (preceeded by a snippet of Heart of the Sunrise)
    - I've Seen All Good People
    - Kashmir (Led Zeppelin) segueing into....
    - Don't Kill the Whale
    - Lose Yourself (Eminem, which Jon announced as one of his favourite songs ever) segueing into....
    - State of Independence
    - Southside of the Sky
    - Fly Away (Lenny Kravitz) segueing into....
    - Long Distance Runaround
    - Owner of a Lonely Heart
    - Perpetual Change (slightly abbreviated)

    School Of Rock kids:

    - Mood For a Day
    - Leave It

    Intermission

Jon Anderson and the School of Rock kids:

    - Close to the Edge
    - And You And I
    - Siberian Kathru
    - Let’s Dance (David Bowie) segueing into....
    - Starship Trooper
    - Roundabout (ending with the same snippet of Heart of the Sunrise that started the first set with Jon)

Note; the covers were not the full songs, often just a first verse and chorus then segueing into the Yes song following it.

Note 2: There's a reason why both with Yes as well as with Jon Starship Trooper and Roundabout are played as finale; it brings the house down each and every time!!

That's fantastic thanks for the review. Shame they didnt do the complete HOTSR, if they dropped one of the kids songs there might be room for Soon.

Not a fan personally of just "Soon" without the preceeding rest of Gates of Delirium. "Soon" for me works much better in the context of the whole piece than on its own.

Furthermore I rather liked that for portions of the show the focus was on the kids and not on Jon, despite booking the show for Jon of course, because they work so hard and do so well, they really deserve some of the spotlight.

It looks like you have left nothing for me to say after I have seen the show in a week and a bit! 😀
Thanks for such a detailed review. It has left me feeling even more excited for my show (assuming I find a way around the transport strikes!)

Thank you for a fun and detailed review of the show. I will use your set list details on my news site. I am looking forwards to seeing the tour next week here in London.

                However, might I say...

Why does every review of Jon Anderson's activity have to re-hash a rivalry with Howe's Yes and whether Anderson should return to the band? What does it even mean to talk about "Anderson back fronting Yes"? Anderson can and is going out there singing Yes songs, with two different line-ups at present. This is great. Are you saying that Anderson should be singing Yes songs with Sherwood, Downes and Schellen as his backing band? Are you saying Anderson should keep singing with his current backing bands, but they should be called Yes? Are you saying Anderson and Howe should work together? It ain't gonna happen and we can't make people work together who don't want to. Can't we enjoy what Anderson is doing without comparing it to some fantasy activity he isn't doing?

I'm well aware of the reality, Henry.

I am saying indeed that Anderson and Howe should work together, because it is clear to me now what Anderson would bring to that in terms of performance, as it is alsi clear to me what Howe would bring and the two of them together would be more than the sum of their parts and would take the performance of Yes songs to another level (again). I think it's a missed opportunity for the fans, that Howe is holding this off. No doubt for good reasons for himself and no comment of mine is going to change that, but from what I've seen a real pitty.

It’s kinda like chocolate and peanut butter had a fight so nobody gets Reese’s cups anymore, just different variants of imitations, some of which taste OK, but none of which compare to the real deal.

Great review. I feel the same each time when I see Jon and the Kids. It’s just a wonderful evening of everyone on stage enjoying the night, having a great time, and the crowd doing exactly the same! Great fun every time. Glad you enjoyed it and glad he is playing on your side of the pond for all to go see him.

I’d love to see Steve Howe produce a Yes album with Jon Anderson on lead vocals and as a primary writer (with Jon D retained for co-lead and harmony vocals, like Rabin’s vocal role in YesWest). I just want to see how it would turn out. It will never happen, of course, but that would be interesting.

Having recently seen Jon with the Geeks in NY,I appreciate what you’re saying with regard to Jon,Steve and Yes, but let’s be honest,it’s not happening is it,and anyway I enjoy Yes the way they are and wish they would hurry up and announce some dates for this year.😎

Welcome to the dark side. It was apparent starting with Yes featuring ARW how much better Yes music sounds with a full band with Anderson (and Wakeman) seeing 2 shows in person and and seeing lots of YouTube clips and listening to bootlegged shows of him with the Band Geeks and School of Rock along with YesFARW.
                            Not on Yes' payroll.

Thanks for that detailed review Arno! Nice to see how much you enjoyed yourself, and that Anderson is performing so well!

Of course the situation is what it is, but I agree with you that not having Anderson in the mix is a missed opportunity for fans, if not for Howe. Fact is, folks have been discussing Yes personnel preferences and ideas pretty relentlessly for over 50 years - at least since Bruford left in 1972. It seems to be a pretty integral part of being a Yes fan. I can't see that changing any time soon. When I see a discussion that I don't like or agree with, I try (mostly successfully!) to ignore it, or at the very least I don't participate.
