  • Squackett's "A Life Within a Day" was released on this day 11 years ago

May 28 2012 saw the release of Squackett. The title track "A Life Within a Day" won the 'Anthem' award at the Progressive Music Awards that year.

So, how do you look back on this album?

A missed opportunity honestly. I love the work of both of these guys, but this seemed to focus more on the vocals than the instrumentation. I prefer their collaborations on Steve's solo work - and even the Christmas disc from Chris.

It has some nice music on it, but I don’t understand why Steve Hackett even tries to sing.

Great album! Love Steve Hackett's work anyway and this was essentially a Hackett album feat. Squire in a big way. I had a conversation with Steve in Milton Keynes abut this project prior to its release, based on rumours on Henry's website that were circling around the time. He seemed excited, and happy that I knew about it!

Highlights for me were A life within a day, tall ships, sea of smiles and cant stop the rain falling. 7/10

They worked well together, would have been cool to get more from them, I know that Hackett appeared on Swiss Choir and Chris on Out of the Tunnels Mouth and Wolflight (his final appearance prior to his death)

I'm pretty unfamiliar with the album as a whole but parts of it get stuck in my head without having heard it in years so that's got to be point in its favour.

Seeing Yes perform “Aliens” was the last time I was surprised at one of their concerts. It could’ve been made to work on From a Page.

One of my favourite albums. I often return to it.

Well, I prefer Hackett on Genesis' albums, and maybe on his solo albums, but I like A Life Within a Day, more of all the song Can't Stop the Rain. I love Chris' voice.

Life Within A Day has more of a Hackett vibe than a Chris one, but I enjoyed it at the time and still pull it out time to time when I'm in a mood for more recent/2000's Hackett. Tall Ships, Aliens, Divided Self, The Summer Backwards, all great stuff. I would have liked a second album from Squacket, with a little more Squire element. Maybe without Roger King. If you have Roger King as the third member/arranger, then it's a Hackett album. A second one may have had more balance, maybe. I have it filed in my Genesis solo/Hackett section on the rack and not with the Yes spin-offs/related like Circa, Badger, etc. Oddly enough, GTR is placed in the Yes sections.

I know A Life Within A Day probably wasn't some big instrumental prog-out that some wanted it to be, but it's a fine album.

I like the two first and the two last songs the best myself. I don't play the rest much anymore.

I loved it when it came out, and it was cool that these two worked together, had hoped for more.

Life within a Day reminded me of UK a bit.

I still really like most of this album, Especially the Squire heavy tracks. The production is quite high tech, too bad Paul Stacey didn't produce. I love the sound of Syndestructable. Chris told me he was hoping Paul could produce a Yes album in the future. Oh well.
