Bill played drums with Phil on the Trick Of The Tail tour of 1976. From the few live documents I've heard, this was a unique but brief setup, but that tight Bruford snare and his unpredictable method was something special. That Genesis In Concert film, just before Phil Collins does that tambourine dance in sync with the rhythm on 'I Know What I Like', Bruford and the band snap together in total synchronization. One of the most musically 'on' moments of either Genesis or Bruford's entire career. Just that moment alone was pure magic. You actually saw Tony Banks smile on stage.
A shame that an archive whole concert from that tour hasn't been released on CD, just to check out Bruford's contribution to the drums - whether backing the band when Phil was up singing or playing drums alongside him on the more instrumental bits. He was never going to stay there full time, but he helped get Genesis onto the next rung of their ladder on the way up. He probably found them too 'composed' or rigid but was happy to do it just to stay on the scene after King Crimson folded and while he was in active with appearances with other artists, including his ex-Yes bandmates' solo albums during that same era. Anybody catch that tour way back in that day and age? Anything you remember about Bruford with them?
