  • Top 5 Bill Bruford Yes songs

    Purely from a drummimg point of view, what are your five favourite Yes songs when it comes to Bill Bruford's performance?

  • #2
    Any four from Yes Music Plus for me, unless live shows are not eligible. Plus Roundabout in the studio recording.

          That's quite an original list. Are we sure "Silent Talking" is all Bill?

            I’m sticking to my “no repeat tracks” rule. Maybe I’ll compile it all into a playlist. Bruford is the only drummer credited for the ABWH tracks on Union so unless they brought in an uncredited drummer, which seems unlikely as they credited everybody else, it is him.

              Roundabout
              America
              Heart of the Sunrise
              Then
              Every Little Thing

              Bruford’s unorthodox playing was one of the first things that drew me to loving Yes music. While I think AW made Yes a more powerful and “rockier”band, Bruford was a unique player, and that style fit early Yes music like a glove.

                Amen. His work, especially on Fragile and Close to the Edge, elevates the music in ways that are generally impossible with only a drum kit and non-chromatic percussion. But then there are the first three albums. This is going to be tough!

                  I guess.

                  I don't put much thought into these I just pick 5 personal highlights.

                      I'll go:

                      Perpetual Change (yessongs version)
                      I See You - love the jazzy Banks/Bruford duet. Wish there was more of that sorta thing.
                      Somethings Coming
                      Astral Traveler
                      Evensong - I like the Bruford/Levin duet... wait. That's King Crimson. Nevermind
                      ok, then America or HOTS

                      notice a lot of early stuff. Bruford may have been his Yes best actually during the Banks era. Anyone else half agree? He's pretty happening on those 1st 2 albums.

                      no, nothing from CTTE. I always considered that an Alan White Yes album, even if Bill Bruford appeared on the studio album.

                        My bad - I'd forgotten the Yessongs version of Perpetual Change. That should go on my Bruford and Howe top 5 lists.

                            Hard to name only 5, but today I immediately think of:

                            Something's Coming ;
                            Long Distance Runaround;
                            Close to The Edge;
                            Siberian Khatru;
                            Birthright;

                              Great list. I would add Heart of the Sunrise. I also love that middle section and ending in Birthright. Astral Traveler is pretty groovy as well. So much great stuff
