No Gates......Are you kidding me

I am sure this was covered on the last site - Whether folks agreed or disagreed with the decision to not have Gates on the release....

The draw and excitement and buzz for this show was Gates. And it’s not on the record. Ridiculous decision whomever made it. And a slap to Yes fans. I have always said they don’t “owe” us anything, it’s a business. But they sell just As many records with or without Gates on the release.

Thank god we have downloads avail of the tour. I don’t have a download of this show so I don’t know of there was an issue with Gates. If there was, they should have subbed from another gig.

Good document of the tour. But sadly missing a key component.

But I agree with you. I haven't bought this release and neither for instance both "Like it Is" releases, because none of those are complete shows. And I think a live document of a tour should be comprised of the full show.

I guess the reasoning behind not including Gates was because they were going to eventually include it instead on a future Relayer album series live release. But then the pandemic came, and no Relayer tour yet, so were still waiting on a live Gates on a current live album. But I agree, it should have been added to the Royal Affair live album. Maybe they thought that it would be too much repetition to include it again, but yet the last 4 or 5 live albums end with either Roundabout and Starship Trooper or Starship Trooper and Roundabout, and the next live album will probably do the same. It's to the point that I can't tell the difference between them if they were played to me back to back. So to me it would not be too many Gates.

What they could have done was put out a stopgap EP or album with Gates and another track or two like Survival from the 2018 tour. Come to think of it, there wasn't a live album for the tour with Dylan Howe. Survival wasn't documented. But I'm sure that album would have ended with......Roundabout and Starship Trooper lol.

Just goes to show if you put something off, it may never happen (at least not as planned). It was a crime to not include GoD on this, and that's why I never bought the album.

That would have been the deal-maker for me as well; as it was, the cover songs are of little interest to me, Roundabout and Starship Trooper, well, iTunes tells me I could put together a 2.5 hour and 1.75 hour album of just those songs, respectively, so do I really need any more? The only song that interests me is Onward, and the K2A version is immaculate… Drop R & ST and add GoD, and I probably would have sucked it up, though, just for old time's sake… Ah well.

this album always did seem utterly pointless, yes 50 live is a much better choice

It did not bother me that they left GoD off of this live release.
I have heard several versions of GoD from this tour, and it was fine but, to me, not as strong as the versions they have played on several other tours.
If I want to hear this song live, I think the Yesshows version is the best official release of a version of this tune and I still enjoy that version.

I love the current lineup, but I think it can be said for almost all songs on the last few live releases that there are older, stronger versions to be found. But to me "the best version of a song" is not the point of live releases. The point is document a tour/show, mainly for those who have been there to have something to go along with their own memories or for those who couldn't be there to be able to see/hear/feel what it was like. So therefore, such a document should contain the whole show and not have songs ommited, like almost all of the more current live releases have (Yes50 live miss Heart of the Sunrise and Perpetual Change for instance). For me it is a reason not to buy them.

I felt that way, too, but the Royal Affair album is probably the best live album, performance -wise, of the three (or five) live albums the current lineup has put out. I never really cared that much for the Yes cover of No Opportunity Necessary but love this version, for instance. Lots of energy on this album.
