"We all gotta climb mountains!" - Jon Anderson 2003
Oh my. When will these marketing people learn that hyping things as much as this, as if it's the second coming of prog, is only going to backfire. It almost put me off from listening to the released track.
Well, this certainly sounds more organic and far less processed than anything of the first album. The middle and end solo are crunchy with a bit of hammond underneath it. That sort of 'attack'/more fierce approach I would have liked to be present throughout the whole track. But still I like it better than anything of the first album.
Very exciting to get more details, including a release date, for the new album. Pretty snazzy cover art, too.
There being only six songs on the album would lead one to speculate that there's probably at least one 15 or 20 minute "prog epic" in that mix.
The first single is a nice listen. I have a hunch that it won't be my favorite song from the album once I've heard them all repeatedly and given them some time to sit, but it's a good listening experience.
It'll be interesting to hear what they do with some of those other song titles in terms of lyrics and music. Several of them are intriguing.
"A lot of the heavier conversations I was having with Chris toward the end were about his desire for this thing to go forward. He kept reiterating that to me. [...] He kept telling me, 'No matter what happens, Yes needs to continue moving forward and make great music. So promise me that that's something you want to do.'. And I have to keep making music. It's just what I do. [...] I'm a fan of the band and I want to see it thrive and that means new music." -Billy Sherwood
I believe the new one will be more 'proggy' and I can imagine it being along the lines of Circa Valley Of The Windmill, which isn't a bad thing. I think there's a Sherwood interview where he said the record company wanted a more straight forward rock album for the first album. The self titled last track (Arc Of Life) on this new album was held back from going on the debut and is supposed to be 17 minutes long. I look forward to getting this one, hopefully Davison gets more vocal time on this one and it sounds slightly less solo Sherwood.
I agree with many of the above comments. I think this sounds better than the first album. It still sounds pretty Sherwood-y. It will be interesting to see whether Kerzner, Haun and Schellen get writing credits on other tracks.
I can't entirely disagree with that. How about this though, a new 18-minute epic from Jon Anderson, developing his "Opus" piece:
anything by arc of life beats this by miles. aimless auto-arpeggiated piano noodling with nothing vocals for 20 minutes straight. might as well listen to the outro bonus track section of The Solution
