Squeaky guitar playing on Sad Night on the Airfield

I found this clip of Trevor Horn playing Sad Night at the Airfield live in some kind of solo concert in Japan from 2012 and he plays Sad Night at the Airfield. The squeaky guitar playing is pretty much the same as on the original album version so it seems like it was him playing it on the album and not Steve Howe.

The squeaky guitar on the Yes version is indeed Trevor Horn. There's an interview with Steve talking about the guitar work on the FFH album where we mentions it, saying he usually goes to great lengths to avoid squeaks but Trevor played that part and inexplicably left these ones in

Nicely played, but the voice? Ye gods, it grates.

Amazing how this world class producer makes his voice sound so good on The Return Trip isn't it?

I never heard that squeak and now I do, I still don’t mind. And, let’s be fair people, this was never a point of discussion until the Return Trip...

I don't mind it either, although it sticks out like a sore thumb in the usually pretty squeak-free environment of the Yes guitar landscape, even on the original FFH.

That, and the Cher-esque synthetic auto tuned yodel on the album's opening line from Benoit, were a couple of curious production decisions on the original album (although in both cases I kinda like them)

I prefer the Benoit David version of Sad Night on the Airfield but the one thing that sticks out like a sore thumb is the squeaky guitar playing. He mostly fixed it on the Return Trip version, however if you listen carefully you can still hear it, he just turned it way down in the mix.

I don't mind the squeaking either, I hear it much as an emotive sound, rather than a musical one, like the grunts & growls Ian Anderson makes playing the flute.

If you hate squeaking strings don't listen to Sabbath! lol

It’s poor technique on nylon string guitar and Howe was pretty much at pains to say it wasn’t him first time around (so that did raise it as an issue).

I believe sometime in the late eighties or early nineties (possibly due to a dismissive remark from John Williams who’s never written a piece that’s made it into the common repertoire of classical players), Howe changed his fingering technique to address that. There was a period he was criticised for having a pretty dry tone, but I do think his Spanish guitar is much improved.

I'd heard that Steve and John Williams got to know each other when Williams formed Sky, and it was Steve he went to see for advice on electric guitars and amplification.

Amazed that Steve Howe could not override Horn and play this piece

It is odd. Steve recorded some new stuff for the new version of the album, so why not re-record the squeaky guitar parts from Horn? It is quite possible that they forgot about it so Horn just tried to minimize it as much as possible in the mix.

No perfect singing at all, and probably really not able to sing through a Yesshow, what Trevor offers here. But still I can enjoy this much more. Anyway, nice to see Lol Creme, made me put on the fine Ismisms by Godley Creme.

I’d not heard that. I believe Howe was on very good terms with Julian Bream, but that there was a little friction between himself and Williams. Can’t remember the source now, but possibly they started out OK and then things soured.

being a fan of the duck call, I have no problem with the squeak either....

however, it might be fun to see a thread like this turn somehow into a hate fest for Howe, the tour, Rabin or even Moraz somehow.

    still undefined
