I don't think the Wrecking Crew came over to the British studios, did they?

Not that that is critical, after all they did feature heavily on some of the Beach Boys' best from the mid 60s and what was produced was all the better for it and doesn't detract at all from the genius of Brian Wilson [for example].

The Monkees were more of a fake band because they were recruited for that very reason and in the main weren't writing their own material, as well as not playing it.

It's fine to like them for what they are, as it is to like the Archies, the Banana Splits, The Spice Girls, or West Life. Significant musical forces? Personally I think their greatest contribution is that they can take some credit for David Bowie. Who knows what would have happened had he stuck with Davey Jones?

    Indeed.

When they started, though, Mike's main instrument was the bass, although he played guitar as well. Peter was actually more of a guitarist, although he played bass and keyboards as well.

Mickey started learning drums once the pilot episode was shot, and had to have one of the others show him how it was done. Good thing he was musical.

And I don't think Davy could play either.

But even if all of them could play, it was a TV show, and the playing was contracted out to professional musicians so that the "actors" could act.

The Byrds, The Who, The Monkees, Peter and Gordon, Simon and Garfunkel, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Yardbirds, Roger Miller, The Turtles, The Mamas and the Papas, The Supremes, The Temptations, The Four Tops, John Coltrane, The Moody Blues, Bee Gees, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Miles Davis, Buddy Rich, Frank Sinatra, Movie Soundtracks were big in my life...the Bond ones, especially Dr. No, Goldfinger and From Russia with Love. Sound of Music, and , er, um, Mary Poppins. Seriously. Judy Collins, Jan and Dean, Kinks, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Peter Paul and Mary, Dave Clark 5, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Freddie and the Dreamers, Buck Owens, Alan Sherman, Bill Cosby, Bob Newhart, Shelly Berman, Stan Freberg, Jonathan Winters, Dick Gregory, Deep Purple, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, It goes on, but I think these were the ones that I listened to the most. Always had a kind of equal love for music and comedy.

Well the Monkees did evolve from the cast of a TV show to an actual band writing and playing at least some of their instruments. Heck, even the Beatles thought they were cool:

I liked the Beatles at the time, but really I was more into stuff that was of the folk-rock variety - Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Lind, Mamas and Papas, the Seekers, I wasn't that much into the beach Boys either until Sunflower came out in 1971 (think that's right), and I discovered Pet Sounds retrospectively.

I liked the folk-rock stuff too, especially the Mamas and the Papas, and Simon and Garfunkel. I remember seeing The Graduate in 1967, was it? And loving the music - it was just perfect for the story. And one of my favorites from the Mamas and the Papas was this one - I know it's a cover, but it is arranged so beautifully.

I also loved the 5th Dimension and had 2 of their 45s!

In 67 I got turned on to the psychedelic scene - Hendrix, of course, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, and one-hit wonders like the Strawberry Alarm Clock. And Cream - Disraeli Gears was in regular rotation on my then record player (I wouldn't have stereo until 1975). Also had the album of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida which got a lot of play as well. But Hendrix was just amazing, and I loved Electric Ladyland!

Except for Strawberry Alarm Clock, these were bands my older brother (by almost four years) listened to regularly. As an impressionable younger brother that thought my older brother was the coolest thing since the popsicle, I loved most of what he loved.

Not mentioned yet, so I will add Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

Also, the sixties was the best period for Sinatra songs, IMHO.

I really liked some Dean Martin stuff in the 60's - Everybody Loves Somebody is a classic. I used to watch his show regularly on TV. And Sinatra's Strangers in the Night was a huge hit. My sister had that one but I liked it too. All the crooners had TV shows or specials. I loved Andy Williams and watched his show. He made a classic out of Moon River.

I've loved the Andy Williams Christmas Album since the 60s. Really liked the Dean Martin Show too, except it was after my bedtime (10:00 PM Eastern time) for the early part of its run.

And I loved all the Christmas specials - seemed everyone had them!

I was born in the mid sixties, but all of my brothers and sisters are older, (except for my twin). I grew up listening to the music of the 60s, though didn't have a real appreciation for it until I hit adolescence. Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Traffic, Vanilla Fudge, Joan Baez are some of my faves. These days, Traffic stands out for me. That band ended waaaaaaay too soon.
