Jon Davison - how will he go down in Yes history?

As opposed to Trevor Horn and Benoît David, he will have a long tenure with the band (7 years in 2019). He has sung multiple classic 70's era albums on tour and is featured on 3 live albums on documenting these full album performances. If anything Trevor Horn and Benoît David might go down as singing on better studio albums than Davison, unless the next studio album changes that. Will the new FFHRT album centement Horn as the ultimate Anderson replacement? Interesting note, Benoît David and Jon Davison both performed with a fragmented Drama lineup (In Jon's case, up until recently). How much will Jon Davison's participation in the current, Alan and Chris-less lineup, affect his legacy with Yes?

As much as I feel he is doing a great job, Yes' history was made a long time ago, at least what is truly significant to that history. Nothing that has been done in recent years or in years to come will match the impact of that what happened with the band in the 70s and 80s had, so in the long run I think it will be a mere footnote, unless the band suddenly starts releasing one mind blowing album after another.

Not a lot unless there's a great YES album in the works. Unlikely but we can dream.

Re: Jon Davison - how will he go down in Yes history?

I think we need to get Davison a string of new Yes studio albums that are well regarded by diehard fans. Obviously, nothing that Yes does now is going to chart really well and get a bunch of radio airplay, getting onto the radar of the mainstream history of Yes, but if they choose to, they could certainly create new material that would resonate with their diehard fans and be talked about for years to come on forums, social media, and whatever is next in terms of the digital meeting place for Yes fans, and be talked about as it's own era that was important to their particular view of Yes and that is debated and enjoyed for years to come.

The problem is that with only one studio album, especially one that wasn't that highly regarded, Davison's primary legacy is going to be thought of as being a stand-in for Jon Anderson and Trevor Horn- a very good one, who perhaps is performing better than either of them could at their ages, with his own stylistic quirks, and some live albums to give his memory some staying power- but, still, ultimately, a stand-in. That's *if* Heaven and Earth is his only studio album. Even a second studio album only does so much.

To have a lasting impact, I think he needs several more Yes studio albums, some of which wind up being beloved by a significant number of Yes fans, even if they don't penetrate to the general rock and roll or music world. That legacy could be magnified if he did 2-3 with Howe and then was allowed to carry on the Yes flame and do several more Yes albums with Billy, Geoff, Jay, and/or whomever.

I wish they'd give him the chance to do that. I suspect they won't. If they don't, there is only so much he can do, you know? In the end, it's about new music.

We've seen what's happened with the way Benoit David is remembered. I love his version of Fly From Here and I like his live album, In the Present, but largely his history is being ignored and even overwritten. It's clear he needed to be involved with more new Yes music to really be thought of as anything more than a footnote by most enthusiasts.

Davison has been around longer and has mostly been better received, but, again, I think he needs to really have this string of new material that combines the Yes style and legacy with his own talents and abilities under the Yes banner, maybe in combination with his new vocal partner, Sherwood. Howe isn't likely to let it happen, which is disappointing to me.
"A lot of the heavier conversations I was having with Chris toward the end were about his desire for this thing to go forward. He kept reiterating that to me. He kept telling me, 'No matter what happens, Yes needs to continue moving forward and make great music. So promise me that that's something you want to do.' And I have to keep making music. It's just what I do. I'm a fan of the band and I want to see it thrive and that means new music." -Billy Sherwood (Quote edited to fit under character limit for sig files)

Guy who sang on tours? Guy who was on the bad album? Guy who is a great friend of Taylor Hawkins? Good Guy? Guy who really likes Jon Anderson?

He’s Brett Scallions to Jon Anderson’s Jim Morrison. Nothing more.

He could do with the guys producing a strong album, maybe two to cement his place on his own terms.

I thought H & E had some substandard material and was overall a bit too laid back, but was still a step in the right direction from it's predecessor. Hopefully Sherwood and Schellen will give a bit more drive next time in a studio...

Maybe not as good as Rudolph, but then again, Rudy guides Santa's sleigh.

I will find out on June 30. It will be the first time seeing him. I like that he was a fan of the band before he joined.

What you will find out is that you will like him. Like I liked Benoit. And He will definitely sing Anderson's songs and Anderson's parts. You'll like that if you like YES.

Mmmm....he is the new singer and he's doing a fantastic job. To be the 'new voice' of Yes IMO there has to be substantially more original Yes material he sings on in the future.
