    Lame 50th anniversary?

There’s no new music. Both bands seem to be touring just as they would normally and slapping a 50th anniversary sticker on it except maybe you get Tony Kaye for a song or two. In terms of catalog/archival releases we’ve got FFHRT, a rumored compilation album that isn’t on the schedule yet and a digitally sourced vinyl box of the stereo original album portion of the Steven Wilson remix releases. Out of all that the only previously unheard and unreleased in any form recording is “Don’t Take No For An Answer”.

Unfortunately it seems like we have to take “no” for an answer if the question is whether or not anything exciting will be happening to honor the 50th anniversary of Yes.

i think the upcoming setlists will help determine if Yes and YesF are celebrating the 50th anniversary lamely or not.

    Re: Lame 50th anniversary?

I think it’s a bit too early to dub the 50th as yet another whiff by YesO and YesF. There are still seven and half months to go in 2018, we don’t know what surprises might be revealed between now and the end of the year. Howe has promised a “more radical” setlist for this summer’s tour, we don’t quite know yet what this “mystery period” he referred to will yield and ARW might be giving us some new music before year’s end.

I think we also have to take into account how the death of Steve’s son and the sickness of Jon’s wife may have impacted timelines for both bands.

Well i did enjoy the UK YES 50 tour and would have gone to the Palladium if i was able
I have a booklet to cherish and as mentioned by Enlighten above maybe the Mystery period will bring new music .
I'm sure by the end of the year we will have new music by both bands .

You are so correct. We are lucky the real living members are still relatively talented. Many 50-year-old groups are jokes. With no original or semi-original members and awful voices. Not so with either band yet.

The only fiftieth-anniversary lamé I want to see is some sweet circa-1980 Buggles costumes.

I use LAME to encode my MP3s, but I don't think it's been around for 50 years.

    Re: Lame 50th anniversary?

I agree with Frum, with the mild caveat that there is of course still potentially time for them to surprise us with something unlikely like stealth releases of new studio albums we didn't know were close to completion, or something of that nature. Projecting out based on the first five months or so and what has been announced for the rest of the year, though, I would say that it at least appears as though the 50th anniversary is not going to live up to the hype.
"A lot of the heavier conversations I was having with Chris toward the end were about his desire for this thing to go forward. He kept reiterating that to me. He kept telling me, ‘No matter what happens, Yes needs to continue moving forward and make great music. So promise me that that’s something you want to do.’ And I have to keep making music. It’s just what I do. I’m a fan of the band and I want to see it thrive and that means new music." -Billy Sherwood (Quote edited to fit under character limit for sig files)

It’s gonna take a whole lot of heavy lifting for the next seven months for 2018 to even measure up to freaking 1997.

    Re: Lame 50th anniversary?

Sounds like Steve wants to do something special by way of the "mystery period" and "radical" set list. Lets hope so! He and Yes seem to keep whatever is up their sleeve close to the vest until it is ready to really happen, and that's cool. I bet they will let us know when the time is right.

And maybe ARW will surprise us with some new music or a cool new set list... Or something besides Rick's bah humbug of it.

In answer to the thread question, nahhhhh. 2 versions of the band still touring 50 years later & with key players still playing in both lineups and still doing themselves justice live. New music expected from both bands and more live releases and dvds, I'll take that!

I think playing the same old, tired songs with nothing out of the ordinary would constitute lame.

    Re: Lame 50th anniversary?

It's not like anniversaries have never been a time to look back.....in fact isn't that what anniversaries are all about? An anniversary is celebrating the past, not celebrating an unknown future. Bands/artists always celebrate their greatest succeses and achievements with anniversaries. This is no different.
Jon Anderson (2018 interview): "We live for one thing alone and that is to find the divine energy within you, that is connected to the divine energy that surrounds us"
