I think this was a short-lived arrangement when Geoff Downes was doing charity work in Bangladesh. The big Buggles European tour was a smash, one of the most successful (and longest) of the decade, but Rabin didn’t work out—“I wanted to be more than a vocoder player” being his famous quote. iirc, Downes returned and, feeling bad that he’d be displacing Rabin, taught him how to play the guitar. The rest is, as they say, is history.

What I can’t remember is the name of the Buggles singer...?

    I never knew that. Thanks.

Not bad for a 13-14 year old, I should have tried harder after my HS rock band disintegrated.
I know nothing, I learned it in school and I MEMORIZED it.

Which isn't bad, considering he was 13 in 1979, being just over 2 months older than I am (April 1966).

Now Henry you should have known no one else was going to give a sh!te about this topic which is why I didn't post about it here in the first place. But okay, let's discuss:

When I reported on this a month ago for the blog...
    http://rabinesque.blogspot.com/2018/...-in-group.html

...it was actually not a surprise to me as such because I had already worked it out back in October, but it was interesting how it was revealed because the group was pretty assiduously keeping it dark, as it were. When fans figured out that Ryan wasn't on the Imagine Dragons tour and kept asking what was up on social media someone finally had to respond (at least on Instagram) and say, "He's just taking a break right now." But I guess they did the same thing when Sean decided to leave, they didn't release a statement but left it to Sean to post his own farewell to fans. I tend to think Ryan won't say anything one way or the other until quite a while from now.

The telling thing is what Christian says about being in the band, and how if you're in the band, then you're on the tour. Which is certainly logical. But Ryan has the luxury of not having to work, so he's the only one who could do this and not have to actually quit. I think Captain Cuts is what he really wants to do but he enjoys the feeling of accomplishment which Grouplove's success afforded him. That he was finally in a band which made it big, and so having accomplished that, now he can focus on the longevity aspects of production and songwriting and being in his own version of The Lonely Island with Berger and McMahon.

Thanks for the first substantive response to this thread. :-)

It seems to me that they would have handled the PR better to have addressed the matter sooner. These "he's not playing with us but he's not out of the band" statements rarely ring true.

While I quite like Grouplove, I'm actually happy for Ryan to focus on Captain Cuts, whose work I generally enjoy more. "Break Up Every Night", for example, is great, if a long way from his father's music in Yes.

I like the newer song they did for Walk The Moon, "One Foot" which I think has a lot of their hallmarks: a crushing hook and bouncy melody and lots of chant-y vocalizations.

It's a common tactic by a frequent poster.

Yeah I'm not on Spotify so I'm not going to be able to view it, but I've listened to just about everything they've been involved with though there's only been a few songs I've liked. For example, I'm not that crazy about "Shut Up and Dance" but most modern indie pop/rock is not really my thing.

I do really like Grouplove, I still listen to Never Trust A Happy Song quite regularly.

Me, I like all the clubby pop stuff, like Bebe Rexha's "F.F.F.", although that's one Ryan didn't co-write. It's just the other 2 Captain Cuts team.

"Shut Up and Dance" is the same - Ryan wasn't involved with it.

But speaking of clubby stuff, I do really like that song they did with The Knocks.
